How to Apply

Make sure you pick a subject that really interests you and that will help you with your future career path.

Order a prospectus, attend an Open Day, and research your course or courses on the Find your course page. 

Each course page has its own entry requirements. We use UCAS Tariff points for most of our undergraduate courses, and you will be able to see the range we usually make our offers from, ie. between 104-120 UCAS points. Each application is considered individually, and we consider a wide range of qualifications, so please contact us if your qualifications do not match the typical UCAS points.

All full-time undergraduate applications should be made online on the UCAS website. Our institution code is W76. We are on one campus, therefore there isn’t a campus code to select. Course codes are listed on the individual course pages.

Try to ensure your application is completed by 6pm GMT on 31 January. As long as your course remains open, we will still receive applications from UCAS after this date, but we cannot guarantee they will be considered in the same way as on-time applications.

You will receive an acknowledgement from UCAS once you have submitted an application, and we will also let you know by email that we have received it. Applications usually take between one to four weeks to process, depending on the course and time of year you apply. The busiest period for applications is December-February when processing times might be longer. If you are worried and have not heard from us, please do contact our Admissions Team as they may have been trying to get in contact with you for further information.

Some of our courses require you to attend an interview or audition – this is indicated on individual course pages in the entry requirements section. Most of our interviews take place from November to May on Wednesdays, although some courses do interview on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Further information will be emailed to you once you have been selected for interview.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL – formerly known as AP(E)L)

Applicants who wish to apply for advanced standing (exemption from part of a programme) based on previous study and/or experiential learning may apply for RPL.

Please note that any credits or marks gained from previous study shall not be counted in your final result as your award is calculated solely on the credits and marks accumulated while registered at the University of Winchester.

 If applicants wish to apply for advanced entry, they must provide:

• Transcripts confirming the module titles and grades they have already achieved
• Module handbooks and/or programme specifications showing the learning outcomes of the modules completed.

This information is reviewed by the programme team to assess whether advanced entry is possible. We are unable to consider advanced entries without this information. If we are able to consider an advanced entry application, the Admissions Team will advise you to apply.

Your UCAS Track will be updated to show the outcome of your application. If you have received an offer, you will also receive an email from the University, and get an offer letter in the post within a week if you live in the UK. Do contact the Admissions Team if you don’t receive this or need a new one sent out. The letter contains your student number (also known as applicant ID) which you will need when you apply for housing.

If you have been unsuccessful at an interview or audition, in most cases we will contact you by email to offer you alternative courses. If we are unable to make you an offer on any course, you will be able to see why on your UCAS Track – usually this is because you do not have high enough qualifications to meet our minimum entry requirements.

Your offer will either be conditional or unconditional. Conditional means that you need to complete various qualifications, or provide evidence or a reference. The conditions will be shown on your UCAS Track. Unconditional means that you have already met our entry requirements and you have a confirmed place if you want it.

UCAS will let you know the date by which you need to make your firm (first) and insurance (second) choices by, which is usually at the beginning of May. However, you don’t have to wait until this date – you can choose your first choice university as soon as you have received all of your decisions.

To help you make your decision, you may like to attend one of our Applicant Open Days which take place in February and March, or Taster Lectures to give you a real feel of what it would be like to study here. If you are unable to attend an Open Day, you can book on to a Campus Tour.

If you have any questions or concerns about your offer, please contact the Admissions Team. You can also discuss deferring your place, or changing your course from the one you originally applied for.

Once you have chosen Winchester as your first choice you can apply for accommodation. Applications open in January, and we guarantee you a place in University-managed accommodation if you apply by the published deadline*. You can only apply for accommodation if Winchester is your Firm choice university, not if we are your Insurance choice.

To make an application, you will need your Winchester student ID number, your surname and date of birth. You can find your student ID number on your offer letter or from emails sent to you by the University.

If you are applying for a student loan, Student Finance England opens for applications in the spring (March/April). 

Now is also the time to check out any awards and bursaries that you might be eligible for.

To use Extra, you must have already used all of your five original choices, and not be holding any offers. Extra opens at UCAS at the end of February and runs until the beginning of July. If you didn’t use all five of your original choices, you may be able to add an additional choice to your application via your UCAS Track.

Clearing opens at the beginning of July, and can be used if you do not have any offers, or if you want to make a late application. Do check at UCAS to make sure we are still open for the course you want. In August – once all the exam results are out – we will have a dedicated Clearing helpline for you to ring if you did not get your place confirmed elsewhere and want to see if we have a space for you. Find out more about the Clearing process.

If you are holding an unconditional place with us, you should receive enrolment information during the summer. If your place is conditional on results, your enrolment information will come to you later in August. This will give you all the information you will need to know in preparation for joining us in September. 

It’s very important to complete enrolment by the dates specified, and access your student record so that you can see any messages about your course and also your Welcome Week schedule. This schedule will include the times you need to be in university for your enrolment and induction sessions. Your enrolment takes place in person at the university, after which you will be able to access your full timetable.
