This short course will provide Registered Nurses and Registered Allied Health Professionals with a comprehensive understanding of rehabilitation theories, and interventions to encourage healthy ageing.

Course overview

Students will develop critical skills to enhance their own rehabilitation practice and enable a self-managed approach to their clinical practice.  Students will explore theories of leadership and critically reflect on leading their teams and services. 

The module is delivered by Dr Esther Clift, Visiting Lecturer at the University of Winchester, and Consultant in Frailty.

Course details

Location

Face-to-face learning on the University site in classrooms and online learning delivered via virtual learning environment.

Learning and teaching

The summative assessment at the end of the module, is an academic poster presentation. 

Students will deliver a poster presentation and critical reflection on their practice.

The student will be required to prepare for taught sessions through accessing reading and materials on the virtual learning environment.

Quality of life factors Credits

Drawing on previous learning about person and relationship centred care, applying the theories to improving the quality of life for people living with dementia. Living well with dementia and individual wellbeing within the care home environment will be reviewed, based on the learners enhanced understanding of dementia. The importance of a persons life history, integrating  the  core values  and the benefits of sensory therapies and interventions in dementia care. 

Leading a Team in Dementia Care Credits

Exploring leadership approaches, principles of team leadership and how to inspire a team operating in a pressurised workplace with a dementia focus. Concluding with how to develop a creative & innovative team.

Entry requirements

Health Professionals

This module is aimed at practicing Registered Nurses and Registered Allied Health Professionals working in community rehabilitation, who are in roles leading to or that will require advanced skills. Students are required to have at least 3 years’ experience working in practice. Students should be working in, or towards an advanced practice role with support from their manager.

Course will start September 2023 and May 2024.
