Managing your money as a student is a skill you will develop during your time at Winchester. We have compiled information on the part-time work available, the best deals on commuting to campus and everyday deals and discounts.

Part-time work

If you're interested in earning during your studies, there are many part-time jobs available both at the University and in the city. Here are some options:

At the University

At the Students' Union

In Winchester city

Our students are fortunate enough to have many part-time hospitality and retail jobs available in the city. Popular examples include clothing chains Primark and TK Maxx, HMV, supermarkets (Sainsbury's, Tesco and Aldi), restaurants and Everyman cinema close to campus.

If you're interested in finding out more, the University has an excellent Careers Hub for support with getting a job, as well as the job platform CareerConnect that posts University and external vacancies.

Other ways to save at Winchester include:

Travel savings

Walk and cycle

You're already saving money when you come to Winchester because everything is so walkable. Unlike other universities both of Winchester's campuses are within the city and are only a 10-15 minute walk from the centre so if you're living in Winchester you can easily get to your lectures without needing to pay for transport.

There are free covered cycle racks and bike lockers and the Bike Doctor comes on campus regularly to give your bike a free safety check.

Bus

Winchester has a range of bus services by Stagecoach. The current government fare cap is maximum £3 for a single journey. Students travelling from Southampton on Bluestar buses can get a 7-day ticket for £14.50 or an annual pass for £385 on the Unilink website or app.

Train

The University currently helps students save an average of 34% on South Western Railway season train tickets. If you don't need a season ticket, get a railcard for £30 which gives you a third off each journey. Take a look at the map below to get an idea of commuting times by rail.

Driving and parking

As a driver the best way to reduce your environmental impact and to save on fuel costs is to car share with other students. Winchester has an excellent Park and Ride Scheme with five car parks around the city, where you and up to six other students can get a parking space and a group bus ticket to and from the University for up to £3.50 all day or £3 if you park after 10.30am.

We also have regular parking deals which are renewed every year. For more information and further deals, visit the Travel section.

If you will be commuting in, whether that is by bus, car or train, consider joining the friendly Commuting Students Network (nominal joining fee) so you can use the on-campus Commuters Lounge and meet up with others who commute.
