Having always had a keen interest in forensic science and criminology, Paige began her career journey by enrolling on a Forensics degree at the University of Winchester after studying A-levels in Human Biology, Geography and Environmental Studies. Since graduating in 2018 and volunteering as a Special Constable, she has gone on to build her career and now proudly works as a Digital Forensic Examiner for the Police.
Why did you choose to study at the University of Winchester?
I loved that Winchester was a smaller university. I didn't feel like a number there. All my lecturers knew me and so my experience felt more personal. I also love the city and the surrounding nature, not only was I in a city close to amenities, I felt like I had the best of both worlds with countryside views and river walks and the nature reserve. The course wasn't very old when I joined and it was interdisciplinary; combining forensics with criminology, psychology, geography, archaeology and the history of forensic science.
What stands out about your experience at the University of Winchester?
One of the best things about my Winchester experience was the lecturers' industry experience. Many worked, or had worked, in the fields they taught, helping to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This not only helped us prepare for real-world challenges but also provided valuable networking connections.
Beyond the academic learning, I developed valuable personal and professional skills through group projects, which increased my confidence in working as part of a team and sharing ideas.
What did you enjoy about being in the city of Winchester?
Outside of my studies, Winchester felt safe and peaceful, I felt like it was a home from home. I was near to my home and family, but I could also jump on the M3 and go to the New Forest. The amenities in and around Winchester are great, and living there helped me become more independent. I was able to make the most of my own time, join societies and live near friends.
How did studying at Winchester help you to prepare for the world of work?
I was given the opportunity to lead a team in a forensic archaeology assessment where I could display problem solving skills, time management, critical thinking and collaboration skills to successfully complete the task. I continue to use all of these skills in my current role as a Digital Forensic Examiner. Leaning how to write reports and maintain contemporaneous notes has also proved invaluable and directly supports my work today.
The course also had an academic and employment module which helped prepare me for the world of work. I'd write out a personal statement, a CV and enhance core skills employers look for such as time management, problem solving and critical thinking. They also encouraged us to use LinkedIn and build connections in the fields that interact us the most. I leant that you can't wait around for a job to find you, you have to go out and find it and fight for what you want, and take every opportunity that presents itself.
Tell us a bit more about your current job
As a Digital Forensic Examiner, I'm responsible for imaging and examining mobile phones using advanced forensic tools to retrieve active, hidden, and deleted information across various operating systems like iOS and Android. I'm also responsible for evidence preservation, maintaining chain of custody and reporting on the data obtained.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is knowing that a piece of work I did was able to catch a bad guy or two! As cliche as it sounds, knowing that I can make a difference to investigations makes me happy. I'm proud of the progress I've made in digital forensics and hope to continue growing in the field, learning more forensic tools, sharing my knowledge and working my way up.
What advice would you give someone considering studying this subject?
Absolutely go for it! Digital Forensics in particular, is an ever growing, ever changing field. It's never a boring day at the office. Forensics integrates different subjects, opening doors to diverse career opportunities and creating transferable skills.
