Alex, BA (Hons) Forensic Studies

I am currently a Research Analyst for the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) in London. I graduated from BA (Hons) Forensic Studies [now BSc (Hons) Forensic Investigation] at Winchester in 2017. I then completed a MSc at another university in Countering Organised Crime and Terrorism and after ten months working for the Metropolitan Police, I arrived at my current role.

Winchester was a formative step in this journey. The course I completed, taught by so many charismatic and engaging lecturers, provided a strong foundation of knowledge in the field of forensic science. Simultaneously, the course offered modules rarely found in other similar courses. It is this aspect of the course I enjoyed the most and to which I keep coming back to and relying on in my career.

Winchester also offered me an excellent selection of extracurricular activities. An example of one I participated in is the Student Union’s Student Fellows Scheme (SFS), where along with a staff partner from the university, we worked on a project with the goal of making an improvement on the university experience for all involved. The project culminated in a presentation and actionable recommendations to the appropriate stakeholders. By participating, I gained valuable project management and presentation skills that have served me well to this day.

My advice to any applicant considering Winchester would be to factor in all the opportunities the university can offer, even beyond the course structure. Due to its comparatively smaller number of students and to the University – based on my experiences there – never compromising on the quality of its establishments and opportunities provided, there are many chances to mould yourself into the person you imagine yourself being in your career and in your life.
