Ceri bravely bares her soul in this open letter to her first year self. We’re so pleased to see how Ceri has flourished during her time at Winchester and will shortly begin her final year studying Creative Writing.

Dear First Year Me,

Don’t be scared. I know that starting university is a big step, but you don’t have to be afraid. You’ll be ok, I promise.

Try not to get hung up on your friends and your boyfriend. It’s ok to miss them, but don’t let it hold you back. Winchester is full of so many amazing people so you should give them a chance. You’ll like them, I promise.

Join a society. I know talking to new people can be daunting, but it’s the best way to meet others with your interests. Did you know there is a Taylor Swift Society? Go to it. You’ll have fun, I promise.

Get out and about. Go and enjoy some sunshine. Explore somewhere new. Do something you love, like shopping. You’ll enjoy it, I promise.

Talk to your flatmates. You don’t need to hide in your room. If you give them a chance, you’ll like them. It’s worth trying, I promise.

Call your family. Let them know how you’re feeling. It’s okay to need to talk. Don’t bottle it up, it’s better to share, I promise.

Do your assignments. I know it’s sometimes hard to find the motivation right now, but it’s best to get ahead. You want to do well, don’t you? You will if you start early, I promise.

Reach out to people. If you want to meet up with someone, ask. Don’t wait for them to come to you. Being brave is worth it, I promise.

Apply for the job. Being a Student Ambassador is much less scary than it sounds. It’s actually quite fun and you’ll meet so many amazing people through it, I promise.

Don’t be afraid to say ‘no.’ I know you don’t want to let anyone down, but sometimes you have to put yourself first. Trust your gut, it’s important, I promise.

Go home if you need to. I know you’re wary of relying on your family too much, but that’s what they’re there for. They’ll help you, I promise.

Please ask for help. I know your mental health is bad. Reach out. Get support. Please go to therapy. You need to look after yourself. Once you do, you’ll feel better, I promise.

Work hard. Play harder. Spend time with friends. Talk to your family. Meet new people. Try new things. But whatever you do, look after yourself.

Love from

Second Year Me
