Staff from the University of Winchester are saddling up for a series of talks aimed at cyclists of all ages and abilities.
Advice on how to get the best out of mind, body and machine will be covered over the course of three presentations at the South Downs Social café in Winchester’s King’s Walk.
First up, on 20 February, is Chartered Physiotherapist Liam Newton, who manages the University’s Winchester Clinic. Liam will be discussing common aches and pains experienced by cyclists – including knee pain, lower back strain and neck stiffness - and explaining how to avoid and manage these problems.
On 27 February Dr Tim Holder, Senior Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Psychology, will talk about the importance of mental strength and ‘self-talk’ in helping riders achieve their cycling goals.
In Perfect Your Ride (6 March) Dr Chris Whittle, Senior Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Biomechanics, will be looking at the science of bike fitting. Frame size, crank length, bar height, saddle position, cleat placement – how can these affect performance?
Jo Stark, Head of Innovation and Commercialisation at the University of Winchester, said: “The University has a wealth of expertise in working with athletes at all levels and in various disciplines. Working in partnership with the team at South Downs Social is enabling us all share our knowledge, experiences and passion with the regions cycling community, I’m really looking forward to this series of talks.”
Tickets for these events, cost £5 including free beer, wine or soft drink on arrival. Each talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Doors open at 7pm and talks start at 7.30pm.
