Frequently asked questions

What are the timings for the day?

This day is all about you as an applicant to the University of Winchester, and your chosen course. It’s a chance to get a step ahead, meet the academics who teach your course and start to picture what your student life could be like here at Winchester.

TIMINGS OF THE DAY

  • 9-9.45am – Arrivals and Registration: each course will have a designated Registration Point on campus, we will send details of where this is, including map and parking instructions, nearer the time.
  • 10am-12/1pm – Applicant Academic Session: a student Course Champion will bring you from your Registration Point directly to your Applicant Academic Session where you will meet academics and other students who have applied to your course. You will get a taste for what it is like to study your chosen course as well as have the opportunity to meet other students, ask questions and see course specific facilities (if applicable). This will be for applicants only, during this time your parents or guests have these options:
      • Attend an information session for example Support at Winchester (Student Support and Success, Student Union, Housing, Security), Next Steps (what happens after applications have been submitted).
      • Attend the advice fair to get additional information on areas such as Student Finance, Housing, Student Support, Admissions and much more.
      • Walk into the city centre (15-minute walk) to enjoy Winchester
      • Have a coffee and relax or work in our social learning spaces
  • 12-1pm (depending on when your academic session finishes): meet up again with your parents or guests, go to one of our eateries on campus and catch up on your morning over lunch.
  • 1-4pm – Campus Tours, Accommodation Tours, Advice Hub, City Centre: we know many of you may have visited the campus before and already been on a tour and seen the accommodation but there is another opportunity to do so and refresh your memory. The Advice Hub will be open so you can get answers to your questions on admissions, housing or student finance or head down to the city centre to get to know your future university city. Flick through our A-Z Guide here.

What makes an Experience Winchester Day different from an Open Day?

An Experience Winchester Day is specifically for applicants and is all about your chosen course. It’s a chance to get a step ahead, meet the academics who teach on your course and start to picture what your student life will be like here at Winchester.

There can be lots of unknowns when it comes to joining university – who will be teaching me? What are the main differences with a university assignment? How far is the accommodation from the library? Our Experience Winchester Days are designed to answer your questions.

What can I expect from an Experience Winchester Day?

To ignite your curiosity.

Your course will be the main focus of the day, with the morning dedicated to subject-related activities with other applicants interested in your course. This will give you an opportunity to interact with academics, other fellow attendees and become a part of our Winchester community.

The afternoon is filled with optional information sessions and activities. Get some advice and guidance from our Support and Success department, join a guided tour of campus including our accommodation and get to know Winchester Students' Union and all the exciting extracurricular activities you could get involved in.

We also encourage you to visit the city centre, which is only a 15-minute walk from campus. Get to know Winchester’s coffee shops, majestic cathedral and explore the historic city that inspires the page and screen.

Can I bring a guest?

Yes! Whilst our Experience Winchester days are designed around you as an applicant, we know you may like to bring along your parents, carers or other guests.

During the morning, when you are at your academic session, there will be a bespoke range of activities for your guests. They can participate in relevant activities and discussions, including a hosted panel session with staff from different university departments. Alternatively, they may wish to explore the city or relax in one of our cafés. After your academic session, compare notes with your guests on your respective mornings, before engaging in the optional sessions and tours together for the afternoon.

What are the the lunch options on and off campus?

We have a range of cafés on campus serving hot and cold snacks with vegan options available at every outlet. Winchester city has a huge range of bars, cafés, pubs and restaurants and is just a 15-minute walk from campus.

Where can I park?

We have a limited number of car parking spaces across campus, so please ensure you book a parking permit at the point of booking. If there is no option to book parking, this means that all of our spaces have been booked. If this is the case, please make use of the parking available in the city. Tower Street car park is the closest and is just a 10-minute walk to campus. Winchester has several Park & Ride car parks too where you can park for the day for approximately £3.

Can I get to Winchester by Train?

Winchester is well served by rail and the University is a 15-minute walk from the station.

How do I book my space?

These events are for those who hold an offer to study with us here at Winchester. Please book onto your preferred date using the links above and include your student ID number when you register. Your student ID number is on your offer letter or on your Experience Winchester Day invitation.

When will I receive my QR code?
