Claire has a rich understanding of the journey from novice to expert teacher through her work in initial teacher education (ITE), advisory work and primary teaching before this. She currently teaches across multiple routes into teaching; undergraduate and postgraduate which includes university-based and school-led training. This teaching is augmented by working with qualified teachers who are working towards their own Masters qualification.
Claire's work as an initial teacher educator is complemented and kept current by working with qualified teachers and subject leaders in school. She provides individualised professional development in the context of coaching and mentoring. She has developed a variety of school orientated professional learning approaches in collaboration with schools and the Solent Mathematics Hub. The notion of ‘five big mathematical ideas’ and ‘teaching primary mathematics for mastery’ have created communities of experts who can go on to support others.
More experienced teachers have been provided with the CPD space to reflect deeply and examine their subject knowledge and pedagogical awareness to further develop their practice. Some teachers chose to augment their thinking with a research-based focus, acquiring Masters Credits. This research-driven approach to pedagogy is gaining momentum and Claire currently works with an ever-growing group of teachers who are working on their MA(Ed) with a focus on Teaching Primary Mathematics for Mastery.
