July was a month packed full of events, awards and plans. The historical legacy of the city was celebrated with the launch of a Jane Austen-themed £10 note and a weekend dedicated to celebrating the medieval importance of Winchester.
However, it also looked to the future with the announcement of a new University degree apprenticeship programme. Additionally, the University Chapel and Estates teams were delighted to win awards and we supported the charity fundraising activities of one of our graduates.
Here are some highlights from the last month.
The Chapel won a coveted design award
“Incredibly restrained and beautifully simple, with a contemporary graphic quality and bold use of materials, architecturally, this is a fascinating project.”
These were the judges’ comments when the University’s Chapel took home the coveted Civic Voice Design Award. The Awards recognise buildings and restoration projects which make positive contributions to the local area in terms of their high quality architectural design and engagement with the local community. Our Victorian Chapel was built in 1889 and was renovated by Design Engine
Architects in 2015 as part of the University’s 175th anniversary celebrations. During the project, the Chapel was sensitively restored using local craftspeople and saw the addition of a new altar, font and modern gothic revival-inspired extension.

Building excellence awards name University Client of the Year
Our Estates team were recognised for their effective leadership and project management of building improvements at the 2017 Constructing Excellence Awards.
The University scooped the Client of the Year award for its willingness to go ‘above and beyond’ in the way it treats its students, staff, suppliers, neighbours, wider community groups and procurement partners.
The Awards recognise outstanding companies working in the built environment and projects that have delivered improvements in all-round performance through collaborative working and the desire to make a difference. Find out more
Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship launch
We announced the launch of a new degree apprenticeship scheme to support the development of the next generation of professional managers and leaders.
The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship will be run by the University in partnership with the Chartered Management Institute and sees a new breed of degree-level apprenticeships which combine practical skills with academic knowledge gained through an innovative combination of campus and work-based experience.
The new programme launches at a special business breakfast event at the Winchester Business School on Wednesday 20 September from 8am.
Academics uncover Winchester's medieval legacy at conference
In partnership with the Hampshire Cultural Trust, we celebrated Winchester’s role as England’s ancient capital with a packed three-day international conference on 9-12 July.
Winchester, An Early Medieval Royal City explored the city’s cultural and political life, and its place in the Saxon and early medieval world. Speakers included Eric Fernie, art historian and former Director of the Courtauld Institute of Art, well-known British archaeologist, Professor Martin Biddle and Professor Barbara Yorke from the University of Winchester. Jane Austen £10 note unveiled at Winchester Cathedral
On the 200th Anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, a new £10 note celebrating the author was unveiled at Winchester Cathedral.
The new note depicts a young Jane Austen accompanied by the quote: “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!” A feather quill and and the facade of Winchester Cathedral can also be seen over the transparent section of the note. The new note will be issued in September.
Winchester played a key role in Austen’s life and she spent her final days in the city before being laid to rest in Winchester Cathedral. The University is also proud to share links with the Austen family: two of Austen's brothers supplied funding to help the institution set up as a Diocesan Training College.
Journalism alumnus raises £600 for cancer charity
Stuart Appleby, a University of Winchester graduate, ran two marathons from the comfort of the University Gym on 19 July to raise money for charity.
This incredible distance was run to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, an amazing charity providing medical, emotional and financial support for those suffering with or affected by cancer.
Stuart completed the 50-mile stretch in eight hours and 45 minutes and raised over £600 for charity.
Well done Stuart!
