School of Media and Film

The School is a community with a friendly and informal atmosphere where staff and students study, research and produce media together.

The School of Media and Film is a thriving and energetic department that offers multiple undergraduate ad postgraduate programmes dealing with both practice and academic study in the fields of journalism, music production and performance, media, film and cinema, public relations and advertising.

The philosophy of the School rests on the principle that academic, professional and vocational study are complementary and the department strives for excellence in both academic scholarship and professional media practice.

We aim to provide the best educational experience for you and take pride in doing so within a friendly, intimate and supportive learning environment.

We are also proud of our strong research culture with a growing number of PhD students registered to study a variety of topics. This research feeds directly into our teaching, ensuring a fresh, vibrant learning experience with academics who have an international reputation in their specialist area.

Many staff in the School continue to work as practitioners in journalism, film, advertising and documentary production, digital design, and photo-journalism. This helps us to maintain and foster enduring relationships with local, regional and national media organisations, including those located in the digital design, corporate communications, news, television, and film industries. These links provide opportunities for you to gain work experience and an in-depth understanding of the contemporary challenges faced by film and media organisations.

The School is supported by outstanding industry-standard facilities, including a brand new sound studio and newsroom, as well as professional television studios, radio studios, and a multimedia centre with both Macs and PCs. Find out more about our facilities.

Our Culture-Media-Text Research Centre co-ordinates work on literature, film, media and other forms of culture within and across disciplinary boundaries. The centre hosts visiting lectures and performances, including an annual symposium exploring a topic of current critical interest from interdisciplinary perspectives.

The department produces graduates who are equipped to not only meet, but exceed employers’ expectations and many of them have found rewarding positions in the relevant sector locally, nationally and internationally.
