The dynamic and challenging world of business has encouraged the increasing use of project management across all business sectors. In turn, this has created a heightened demand for qualified project managers, not only in the traditional areas of engineering and technology but also into new fields of practice. These additional areas include health and wellbeing; environmental and community development programmes; education; archaeology; and many of the creative and key service industries (including tourism and event management); inspiring innovative forms of project and programme management.

Studying Project Management at Winchester, you consider and develop practical approaches to project management, exploring and practicing traditional and contemporary approaches to the profession. Study core modules including Fundamentals of Project Management, Approaches to Project Management, Project Management Tools and Applications, Advanced Project and Programme Management, Principles of Responsible Management as well as Research Methods in Business. Then choose from the optional modules: Business Consulting, Leadership in Organizations, and Sustainable Innovation Management. You also complete a Capstone Project which provides an opportunity to complete either a  Dissertation, or a Consultancy Project, or a Business Start Up.

Course details

Learning and teaching

A focus of the programme is the development of the students' capacity to apply the necessary skills to solve real-life problems in project management environments. A wide range of teaching and learning methods are adopted including student-led discussions, case studies, lectures, presentations, group work and team development, workshops involving a range of active learning and authentic scenario based activities, independent study, web-based activities and a series of guest speakers.

Assessment

There is a wide variety of assessment, depending on the aims of the module. Assessment methods include essays, reports, presentations, conference papers, case study analyses and Dissertation business start-up or consultancy reports.

Modules

Fundamentals of Project Management 20 Credits

Portfolios, Programmes and Projects (P3M) are efficient and effective means of delivering strategic change within organisations. This module aims to provide you with a working understanding of portfolios, programmes and projects and identify how they are utilised within organisations to deliver change. Methodologies/ frameworks and standards exist in which to develop programmes and projects and due care is required to construct a robust framework in which to develop the programme and/or project and utilise suitable standards and/or bodies of knowledge. The module develops the skills to plan, monitor and report on P3M. You will develop an in-depth knowledge of the activities required to successfully deliver programmes and projects, understanding how portfolios of programmes and projects improve business results through strategic alignment with the organisational vision. Specifically, explore how to define programmes and projects, plan activities including benefits management, stakeholder engagement, risk, resources and budget management, and requirements for documentary evidence.

Advanced Project and Programme Management 20 Credits

The Portfolio, Programme, and Project Management Maturity Model (P3M3) has become a key standard amongst maturity models and provides a framework within which organizations can assess their current performance and plan for improvement when managing and delivering change. P3M3 provides three maturity models that can be used separately to focus on specific areas of the business or more generally to help organizations assess the relationship between their portfolios, programmes and projects. The aim of this module is to introduce you to the theoretical and practical application of the P3M3 model to a chosen organization to assess its performance and provide relevant recommendations.

Principles of Responsible Management 20 Credits

Organisations are under increasing pressure from various stakeholders to embed environmental and social purpose into business systems and structures, and the module is designed to develop an understanding of opportunities and challenges for progressive and transformative organisational action. This module provides you with a conceptual and practical understanding of the principles of responsible management as presented in the United Nations PRME, and Global Compact frameworks. Emphasis will be given to the business perspective (both from an individual and organisational analytical lens), alongside other societal actors in a broader political-economic context, alongside ethical decisions shaping responsible business management practices.

Project Management Tools and Applications 20 Credits

In this module students build a portfolio around projects with different stakeholders, scope and value. They will explore the foundations of performance measures, and build competence in monitoring and controlling projects through baseline measures, visual management and technology. You will form teams and act as a project management team, reporting to different stakeholders through reports, role play and dashboards.

Approaches to Project Management 20 Credits

This module addressed traditional and contemporary perspectives of project management include methodologies and approaches such as but not limited to: PRINCE 2, Lean Principles, Lean Six Sigma, Agile Approach to Project Management, Incremental Improvement Projects to Strategic, Transformation Programmes, Waterfall approach to Project Management 

Capstone Project 60 Credits

You must choose ONE of the four Capstone Project Options: 

  • Capstone Project - Dissertation
    This module provides an exciting opportunity for you to draw on your learning across programmes and immerse yourself in a small-scale independent academic research project in an area of particular interest to you and relevant to your studies. The purpose of this module is for you to have the opportunity to author a substantial piece of structured academic work exploring a key area of personal interest within the discipline. By successfully completing this module you will gain a deeper understanding of what constitutes credible and ethical management research and have a critical understanding of an area of disciplinary interest.
  • Capstone Project - Placement for Good
    This module provides an exciting opportunity for you to make a real difference to the community in which you live. The purpose of this module is to enable you to work in partnership with host organisations in the private or public sectors, via a work placement opportunity, in an area cognate to the discipline studied. By successfully completing this module you will have gained valuable work experience and carried out a strategic review of relevant CSR issues within the work placement, relevant to the discipline studied. The placement has the specific aim of improving the alignment of the host organisations activities to the UN 17 SDGs.

  • Capstone Project - Consultancy Project
    This module provides an exciting opportunity for you to draw on your learning across programmes and immerse yourself in a small-scale independent consultancy project in a relevant field. The purpose of this module is to enable you to operate as a trainee management consultant for an external organisation or internal client. By successfully completing a consultancy project you will gain a deeper understanding of what constitutes a credible and ethical business consultancy project and a have a broader insight into consultancy within the discipline. 

  • Capstone Project – Start Up For Good

    This module provides an exciting opportunity for you to draw on your learning across programmes, and work towards turning your pre commercial idea into a successful, sustainable, business enterprise, supported by a nine-month tenure within the Winchester Hatchery Incubator Programme. The purpose of this module is to enable you to work with our team of enterprise and innovation experts to develop a viable start up business that has sustainability values at its’ core. The aim is to register the company within the period and launch the business. By successfully completing this module you will gain a deeper understanding of what constitutes credible and ethical innovation research and have an invaluable insight into entrepreneurship.

Entry requirements

A first or second-class honours degree

Normally a first or second-class Honours degree from any discipline or significant professional experience in management. Students with professional Project Management qualifications at Level 7, such as Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management (or its international equivalent), are eligible for entry with advanced standing in accordance with the Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

If English is not your first language: IELTS 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in writing or equivalent.

Multiple copies of core text are held within the library and e-books are identified where possible, however due the popularity of some books, there will not be enough copies for every student.
