Before You Join us

Before you join us in September follow this checklist of key steps you need to complete before you arrive.

   

1. Confirm Accommodation

University-managed accommodation  

Apply for housing as soon as possible as we allocate on a ‘first applied, first allocated’ basis. You can apply online here: Housing application. You can explore what is on offer with videos and virtual tours to help you get a flavour of residential life.  

When you receive a housing offer, make sure to accept your offer - you will then receive further guidance from our Housing Team on what to bring, when to arrive and how to pay for your accommodation. You will move in at some point on the weekend of 14-15 September 2024.  

Off campus 

If you’re not planning to live on campus, Winchester Student Union have some resources on finding private accommodation, as well as general guidance and tips on their Housing Advice pages. They also have a guide for those who will be commuting

 

2. Arrange your finances

Home students: Undergraduate

If you are a UK student applying for student finance, make sure you have already submitted your funding application. For more information on how to apply for your loan visit the following websites: 

Check if you are eligible for any of our undergraduate bursaries or scholarships - Undergraduate Bursaries and Scholarships 

Students on pre-registration healthcare courses such as Nursing and Physiotherapy, as well as students on Social Work may be eligible for additional funding from the NHS.  

In case your funding is delayed, make sure you have enough money to cover your expenses whilst your application is being processed. If you are living in university accommodation, please let our Finance Office know about the delay as soon as possible. 

Look into opening a student bank account - you can do this before you enrol using your UCAS status codes once your university place is confirmed.

Home Students: Postgraduate

A Postgraduate Masters Loan is available to eligible UK nationals (and individuals with settled status in the UK) for postgraduate Masters study. The details of the Postgraduate Loan will differ depending upon where you are normally resident in the UK. For more information on how and when to apply for your loan, please visit the following websites:

A Postgraduate Doctoral Loan of up to £29,390 is available through Student Finance to help with the cost of fees and living expenses for eligible students starting in 2024/25. For more information on eligibility and how and when to apply for your loan, please visit the following websites (Doctoral Loans are currently not available for students from Scotland or Northern Ireland):

Please note; MSc Social Work students are only eligible for the PG Masters Loan or the Social Work Bursary – you are not eligible to receive both.

  • Students enrolled on MSc Occupational Therapy full-time are eligible for undergraduate funding i.e. Tuition Fee Loan and maintenance loan, as well as additional funding through the NHS Learning Support Fund. Students enrolled on the part-time route are eligible to apply for a Postgraduate Masters Loan only.
  • In case your funding is delayed, make sure you have enough money to cover your expenses whilst your application is being processed.

International students

Ensure you have paid your Tuition Fee Deposit (if applicable) online at winchester.flywire.com 

Check if you are eligible for any scholarships or bursaries - International scholarships bursaries and awards - University of Winchester. 

Make sure you have enough money to cover your expenses while waiting to open a UK bank account.  

Once you have enrolled you will be provided with more information about how to access a bank account.

Please note that the above information does not apply to apprenticeship routes.

 

3. Let us know any specific requirements or support needs

 Students with a declared disability 

If you have disclosed a disability via UCAS or your application, please complete the additional requirements form which will have been emailed to you. If you haven’t received this email or need to discuss your requirements further, please email disability@winchester.ac.uk

If you’re a UK full-time student, please look at the NHS HC1 form to be assessed for free or reduced health costs like NHS prescriptions. More information can be found on the NHS Low Income Scheme webpages. 

We also encourage students with physical disabilities to visit the campus before 'Arrivals Weekend' to assess how suitable different access routes may be for them. Please email disability@winchester.ac.uk to discuss further. 

Apprenticeship applicants will complete a different onboarding process to undergraduate and postgraduate students. For more information, please speak to the Apprenticeship team.

Our dedicated Student Support and Success team provides information, advice, support and guidance on many aspects of student life to all students, and we are available during Arrivals Weekend, Welcome Week and throughout the semester.

4. Sign up for Pre-Arrival sessions and connect with other students

University Transition Days, on-campus events designed for new students to meet support staff and fellow students, get tips and tools for success and familiarise themselves with the university environment. (Please note that places are limited and offered on a first come, first served basis.) 

‘Next stop Winchester’ transitions day – 3 September 2024. An opportunity to join us on campus and take part in some short workshops on key topics such as commuting, living in halls, top tips for higher education study and getting connected with IT. Further information and a link to request a place will be shared via email in August.  

(ASC) Familiarisation Day (students with an Autistic Spectrum Condition) - Friday 6 September (by invitation providing students have declared their condition with Disability@winchester.ac.uk).

5. Complete online orientation

Your first step of enrolment is to complete the online orientation module to help you prepare for life and study at the University of Winchester. There are four short, mini units to complete which will provide you with key information about areas such as:  

  • our university community and how to get involved  
  • how to prepare for studying at this next level  
  • how to engage with our online platforms and stay safe online, and   
  • how to manage your money.  

  You can access the units via Canvas, which is our virtual learning environment. The online orientation module will be available from 20 August.  

 

6. Log on to My Record and enrol

It is important that you complete online enrolment before the start of your programme.  You will receive an email with your login details and further instructions from 19 August, with emails being sent throughout August. Online registration opens from 20 August. 

 

7. Check your timetable

Welcome Week Timetable 

 Your Welcome Week timetable will be available in My Record after you have completed the online part of enrolment.  This timetable shows your in-person enrolment slot as well as a variety of welcome talks for you to attend in your first week.

Your University timetable will become available once you have completed in-person enrolment. 

8. Plan your travel to Winchester

We are passionate about the environment at Winchester, so we always encourage you to travel as sustainably as possible when coming to campus. 

Moving to Winchester 

During the room acceptance process, you will be asked to select an arrival slot on either 14 or 15 September. Most students arrive by car and will be given clear instructions on the arrivals process, including where to park and where to collect your key.  

International students  

Visit our International Students page for further details about joining us as an international student. 

Before leaving your home country, we will contact you with essential information about arrival, travel from the airport and settling into your studies with us.  

Commuting to Winchester 

If you are planning to commute, you will receive details of dates and times for activities your programme is running in Welcome Week (16-21 September).  

Once you have fully completed enrolment, including in-person ID checks, you will be able to access your Semester 1 timetable to begin planning your travel arrangements for your teaching. We encourage you to use sustainable and public transport wherever possible. Further details are available on our Travel and Transport pages. Winchester Student Union also provide a commuter lounge on our King Alfred site and the hosts the Commuting Students Network

Please note, students will only be able to apply for a permit to park on campus for accessibility and care reasons. Please discuss this with Student Support and Success in the first instance by emailing student.support@winchester.ac.uk (care reasons) or disability@winchester.ac.uk (accessibility reasons). 

 

9. Join us for Arrivals Weekend and Welcome Week

Arrivals Weekend - Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September 2024 

During Arrivals Weekend, students moving into University Managed Halls of Residence will arrive on campus to collect their accommodation keys and student ID card, meet their new flatmates and be able to join our Arrivals Weekend welcome activities. As part of your arrival, you will also need to attend in-person enrolment, so please bring the original of ID you uploaded online (ie passport, driving license). All details will be available on My Record from 20 August. 

Welcome Week (Week 0) - Monday 16 September to Friday 20 September 2024 

During Welcome Week, you will be able to meet staff and course mates and find out more about your programme through your faculty induction, collect your student ID card and get access to your IT account. You will have a scheduled time to complete your in-person elements of enrolment, including ID checks if you haven’t done this over Arrivals Weekend (students in Halls of Residence). Please bring the original of ID you uploaded online (ie passport, driving licence). 

ID uploaded by students enrolling on the following programmes will be verified online within 5 working days of upload (an in-person ID check is not required): Doctorate/Research, School-led PGCE, Postgraduate Short Courses, Distance Learning, Learning and Teaching, Medical Education, Practice Education, MA Education, and Apprenticeships.

Freshers Fayre – Saturday 21 September 2024 

It’s the last day of Welcome Week and we’re inviting new and returning students to our annual Freshers Fayre.  

At Freshers Fayre you can visit hundreds of stalls to grab freebies from big brands and find out about the best businesses for students in Winchester. Come and find new and exciting opportunities, from sports teams, societies and representational networks provided by your Student Union, to the ways you can interact with the University directly and get the best from your student experience. There truly is something for everyone. 

 

10. Read The Student Charter
