Course details
Learning and teaching
Our psychology programme equips graduates with the knowledge and skills for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership status with the British Psychological Society. We enable students to confidently apply their new psychological knowledge and skills to professional and applied contexts.
Teaching is primarily through a combination of lectures and seminars, allowing opportunities to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups.
In addition to the formally scheduled contact time such as lectures, seminars and workshops, you are encouraged to access academic support from staff within the course team and the wide range of services available to you within the University.
The Department of Psychology places great emphasis on the quality of teaching, and discussions of learning and teaching are regular features of departmental meetings. We highly value the views of our students and encourage them to contribute to our discussions via their student representatives.
The Department houses several laboratories which support cutting edged research in social, developmental, cognitive and biological psychology, and has attracted significant investment in recent years to support both our teaching programmes and our research. All academic staff play an active role in research and in this MRes, students are able to undertake their own research project and make contributions to the vibrant research culture.
Overall Workload

Modules
Please note the modules listed are correct at the time of publishing. The University cannot guarantee the availability of all modules listed and modules may be subject to change. The University will notify applicants of any changes made to the core modules listed. For further information please refer to winchester.ac.uk/termsandconditions
Modules
The module provides a framework for the consideration of research within psychology and spans a wide range of methods and methodologies both quantitative and qualitative. Issues such as validity, reliability, representativeness, sampling, reflexivity and generalisability will be addressed through a variety of different examples of research. Throughout the module students will be encouraged to examine the assumptions underpinning research and its interpretation and to adopt a critical stance to evaluating the methods and analysis they have previously been taught and those they encounter while undertaking this module. Students will also be encouraged to compare research within frameworks (e.g., between correlational, regression and ANOVA designs) and across frameworks (e.g., between experimental designs and focus group interviews), in order to explore different ways of asking questions and the fundamental processes of discovery and knowledge in human and scientific research.
This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to undertake an in-depth review of current knowledge and understanding in a subject linked to their proposed extended research project. The student, in negotiation with the module leader, will agree a chosen area of interest for the completion of the review. The student will be required to adopt a systematic approach to the review of literature and to be able to comprehensively summarise current understanding in their chosen field. Students will robustly engage in processes aligned with searching for articles through different online databases, how to identify relevant sources, screening and data extraction, reporting guidelines, risk of bias and quality scores, and study write-up. Students will also be introduced to meta-analyses and qualitative considerations including qualitative data synthesis.
This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to undertake a substantial independent research project. The module requires the student to plan, design, organise and conduct research drawing upon the research methods and skills, and ethical considerations, that the student has developed in the earlier part of the programme.
The students will work closely with an academic supervisor(s) to define the aims and objectives of the research and to develop a detailed proposal and plan. Supervisors will provide critical advice and guidance on the application of the methods, the interpretation of the data and the communication of the research.
