Q&A with Film Production Graduates Beth and Marie
We asked Film Production graduates Beth and Marie the best things about studying Film Production at Winchester.
Why did you choose the University of Winchester?
Beth: For me, it was because of the equipment my course had and the flexibility for using it for projects outside of the course to get our own work experience.
Marie: I first met representatives from Winchester at an educational fair in Norway when I was still at school. I got to talk to some Norwegian University of Winchester students about their student experience - I felt so at home and so safe with my choice to leave Norway and study at Winchester because of how cared for I felt by the people I talked to. Winchester climbed up the ladder of my choices and when I was offered my place, I knew I would take it.

What were the best facilities or resources on campus?
Beth: Probably the equipment for the course. I used the Multimedia Centre which is open 24 hours a day – that’s so useful. Campus is also very pretty with all its green spaces.
Marie: Easy – that's the Multimedia Centre because it was open 24/7 for us media students. They have all this equipment like weird lights and new equipment, and you got training on equipment you hadn’t used before. I also really liked the West Downs Library, because I like how it overlooks everything and is really open and a really comfortable place for writing an assignment.
What was special about studying Film Production at Winchester?
Beth: The support you get - from teachers and from visiting staff. They’re all working practitioners, so they really know what they’re talking about. I really liked the Screenwriting module because our lecturer worked on TV shows such as Miranda and Not Going Out. This course helped me experience what a real job would be like before I went on to work in TV.
Marie: It is different to other courses. You get to be really creative as it is really hands on. The essays that we had made so much sense to us, as you had to justify why you made a particular choice.

How did studying at the University help you to develop as a person?
Beth: It gave me a new perspective on life and the ability to explore new ways of critical thinking. Winchester really allowed me to grow and develop as a person - I have a new perspective on the world.
Marie: I’m definitely more confident, because as an international student I had to move to the UK during Covid. I had to figure out how to use the trains and so many things I learned independently and how to stand on my own two feet. I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a person and learned a lot about myself.
How did studying at Winchester improve your employability and career prospects?
Beth: It was the Showreel and Entrepreneurship module which showcased my work. I made some videos for the University, for the environmental, careers and musical theatre teams, which helped boost my experience and confidence immensely. And the lifelong careers support helped too, it’s nice that the support doesn’t just stop when you graduate.
Marie: I do feel Film Production here was really good at including actual professionals as guest lecturers. For example, we had a BAFTA-nominated teacher, we had professionals come to talk to us who have had these big nominations and awards to their name and we had these opportunities to talk to them and network with them even before we graduated.
What are you up to now?
Beth: Since graduating, I’ve used the skills I gained on the course in my work since university and have even secured a year-long work experience scheme at ITV. I am really proud of how far I’ve come since starting university and I’ll be forever grateful for my time at Winchester. My career highlight so far has been with Emmerdale - being on set to workshop with the storylining team was amazing.
Marie: I love film and think it’s an incredible medium where you have the chance to do so much to create art, and that is why I wanted a degree within the field. I’m now studying to be a media teacher to help new kids discover the beauty of film. My time at the University was an incredible experience and one I wouldn’t change for the world. The people I met along the way are still some of my best friends, and the lecturers were incredible and helped me prepare for what I would need to become successful.
