From Uganda to Winchester: My Story as an International Student
My Journey to Winchester
In 2022, I came to England to volunteer for a local charity based in Southampton. At the end of my time in the UK, I had the opportunity to visit the University of Winchester. I spoke to the programme leader of Computer Science who gave me valuable insights into studying at the University. I was also able to explore the magnificent West Downs Centre and library. All these state-of-the-art facilities were meticulously crafted to enhance productivity and engagement of learners and I couldn’t think of a better place. I also did my research and discovered that the University is ranked among the top 10 Universities in the UK for graduates in employment and further study. This was the icing on the cake for me. I made my UCAS application which was successful, and I am delighted to be part of the student community today. I am also supported by a scholarship from a local charity called Winchester Rotary and the University itself to study here as a student from a low-income household.

Loving my Course
I love my course because it provides knowledge that can be applied to many fields, this opens doors to diverse career paths and future possibilities in the computing industry. I also love the fact that I am able learn various programming languages to create cost efficient software that addresses the needs of everyday computer users and problems affecting the planet such as climate change. The other reason why I love Computer Science is the promising career opportunities in the field with competitive salaries due to the increasing demand for computer scientists.
Confident and Capable
I have been able to grow in confidence through class assignments and positions of responsibility. My team and I worked on a joint PowerPoint presentation where we had to present to the lecturer and the entire class which was nerve-racking at first but over the first semester, I was able to improve. I was also elected Student Academic Representative for my class which has helped me to build confidence whilst collecting students’ feedback and presenting it to the Associate Dean and other faculty administrators. I now have a paid position as a student Digital Ambassador which is another opportunity that has helped me to grow my confidence through interaction with other students and recording videos for the media team to guide prospective students at the University.
My University Highlights
One of the remarkable aspects of the University is the Academic Skills department which offers useful academic support through workshops and one-to-one sessions. This has helped me to do well in my assignments. I have also been able to join the football, rugby and video gaming societies which has complemented my learning, helped me to make friends and create memories that will last a lifetime.
My Career Paths
The Foundation Year has enhanced my understanding in diverse subjects including Business. Modules like Responsible Business and the World of Business have equipped me with the skills to develop sustainable business plans and understand concepts like corporate social responsibility. Recognising the evolving nature of employment due to Artificial Intelligence and other factors, the modules I am taught in Computer Science are preparing me for a dynamic job market and working in diverse teams. After all, Computer Science thrives in business environments, and the field opens doors to leadership positions. This blend of knowledge and skills makes me a relevant candidate for various career paths.
My City Highlights
Winchester City stands as a captivating blend of history, culture and natural beauty. One of my main highlights is the majestic Winchester Cathedral. It has stunning stained glass windows and I have done two guided tours and each time I went, I learned something new. What I love most is that the city is hospitable and diverse. I am an international student, but I feel a sense of belonging. I have made some amazing friends in Winchester.
My Future
I envision a future filled with innovation, where I play a pivotal role in shaping the technological landscape and addressing complex societal challenges. With the rapid advancements in AI, machine learning and data science, I see endless opportunities to make meaningful contributions in various industries, from healthcare and finance to environmental sustainability and beyond. My aim is to create cost efficient and sustainable software to address some of these problems affecting my community and planet. Ultimately, my future depends on the choices I make.
Balancing technical expertise with soft skills like communication, teamwork and critical thinking will be essential. I also want to share my knowledge and skills with less privileged children back home in Uganda when I graduate. I hope to support them to acquire an education and explore their full potential.
My Advice for International Students
For international students considering Winchester, remember that even the greatest journeys often begin with the smallest steps. I understand that the distance might seem intimidating but think of it as a stepping-stone on your path to self-discovery. Personally, I was anxious before coming to university. However, these anxieties quickly dissipated as I encountered a diverse and welcoming community at Winchester. Immersing myself in the vibrant cultures here has fostered significant personal growth and opened doors for me to new and valuable perspectives. This ongoing experience underscores the transformative power of life at Winchester, exceeding my initial expectations and fostering my intellectual and social engagement. Let your journey to studying here be a testament to the incredible possibilities that await beyond your comfort zone.
