Don't Forget Your Toothbrush
Packing for university can be a daunting process. From bedding to kitchenware to towels, it’s hard to know where to start. Don't worry - we have you covered. Third year student Ceri Evans has put together this handy packing checklist to make your transition to Winchester that much smoother.
BEDROOM
Arguably the most important room! It’s crucial to have a cosy space you can call your own.
- Mattress protector
- Fitted sheet x 2 (for the days you don’t feel like doing laundry)
- Duvet cover x 2
- Pillowcase sets x 2
- Duvet
- Pillows (it’s always good to have a spare one)
- Cushions (to make your new home that much cosier)
- Clothes (and don’t forget the coat hangers)
- Photos of loved ones (so you can be reminded of home)
- Fairy lights (they really elevate a space)
- Fake plants (because real ones can be a bit tricky)
- Boardgames (to play with your new friends)
- Items related to your hobbies (like books, craft supplies, PlayStation games and console – it's important to have fun too)
- Lamp (optional as there is already one in your room)
- Tote bags, so you can avoid those pesky carrier bag charges
- Decorations/sentimental items including, but not limited to, soft toys, ornaments from holidays and pictures in frames
- Accessories and jewellery
KITCHEN
Another really important room for students! If you’re self-catering, you’ll be making your meals here.
- Big plates x 2 (always good to have a spare for company/if one breaks. It’s a good idea to limit it to two so you’re forced to wash up)
- Small plates x 2
- Bowls x 2
- Glasses, at least 2 (take it from me, they break)
- Champagne glasses x 2 (for when you want to be fancy)
- Shot glasses (no explanation needed)
- Washing-up liquid
- Sponges/brush
- Antibacterial wipes (a godsend)
- Kitchen towel
- Tin foil/clingfilm/greaseproof paper
- Foodbags
- Tupperware boxes
- Frying pan
- Saucepan
- Measuring jug
- Mixing bowl (if you feel like baking)
- Kitchen knife
- Utensils set (to include serving spoon, tongs and spatula)
- Chopping board
- Cutlery set (try ones with unique or colourful handles so you don’t get them mixed up with your housemates’ ones)
- Bottle opener (obvs)
- Can opener
- Wooden spoon
- Weighing scales
- Kitchen spray cleaner
- Binbags and tea towels
- Soap
- Water bottle
BATHROOM
Ensuite or shared? These staples will make an appearance regardless.
- Bath towels x 2 (for when you don’t want to do laundry)
- Handtowels x 2
- Bathmat*
- Hygiene bin and liners*
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Shower gel
- Sanitary items for girls
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Soap dispenser
- Flannel
- Toothbrush holder
- Razors
- Medicine including paracetamol, ibuprofen and cold/flu relief
- Mirror*
- Skincare items
- Shower cap (not every day is a hair wash day)
- Body lotion
- Air freshener
- Antibacterial wipes
- Toilet cleaner
*co-ordinate with housemates so you don’t end up with 8 of each if you will be sharing a bathroom
UNI SUPPLIES
Because who doesn’t love pretty stationery?
- Pencil case
- Normal pens
- Highlighters (we love to colour code)
- Notebook (divided ones work really well for different modules)
- Laptop
- USB stick
- Backpack for lectures
MISCELLANEOUS
Other important bits you don’t want to leave behind.
- Prescribed medicines
- Important documents for enrolment such as passport or driving licence
- Cables and chargers
- Extension lead
- Hairdryer/straighteners/curlers, whatever you use
- Acceptance letter in case you need it when you arrive
And make sure you don’t bring any of these
- Candles, joss sticks or oil burners (sorry birthday cakes, singing still allowed though)
- Heaters or electric blankets (a fan for the summer is allowed)
- Unfortunately, family pets have to stay at home too 🙁 (you’ll have to make do with appearances from Casper the campus moggy instead)
And finally.....
We hope this guide helps alleviate any concerns you have about packing! We look forward to seeing you in Winchester soon.
