10 May 2024

Not sure where your studies at Winchester could take you? Read on to learn more about the incredible academic successes of students from each of our faculties. We couldn’t be more proud of them!

Five of our current students were presented with an Academic Excellence Award at our annual Winton Society Awards on 25 April 2024. The Winton Society is the University’s alumni community, which is made up of more than 35,000 people who have studied or worked at the University. The awards mark their achievements and contributions within the University and the wider world.

We held the ceremony on our King Alfred Quarter and the evening was compered by sports broadcaster, journalism lecturer and Winchester alumnus, Angus Scott.

Here are our outstanding winners and the reasons why their lecturers and classmates nominated them:

Duncan with Vice-Chancellor Professor Sarah Greer and Niki Swinnerton, BA (Hons) Marketing Programme Lead

Faculty of Business and Digital Technologies – Duncan Guthrie

As a mature student, Duncan has taken on many leadership and mentoring roles throughout his time at Winchester. He is always keen to champion his Marketing course and liaises with current students from other years to help and support where possible. He continually strives to do his best, setting his bar high, achieving very high grades throughout his three years. Duncan can lead and listen, and his creativity and determination to succeed will see him go far when he moves into industry.

Alastair with Vice-Chancellor Professor Sarah Greer and Dickie Bennett, former Royal Marine and founder of Breaking Ground Heritage

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – Alastair Eager

Alastair, known as Al, served in the Royal Marines for 15 years, including frontline tours of Iraq and Afghanistan. He discovered a passion for archaeology through the Waterloo Uncovered project following medical discharge and he was offered a veteran studentship in archaeology in 2020. After finishing his professional placement year, host company Pre-Construct Archaeology were so impressed they offered Al further work and he continues to work part-time for them. Al also took part in the Nokalakevi dig in Georgia, supervising a trench, directing and training first year Winchester students and other volunteers.

Jordan with Vice-Chancellor Professor Sarah Greer and Dean of the Faculty of Law, Crime and Justice Bill Davies

Faculty of Law, Crime and Justice – Jordan Bushnell

As well as achieving great grades, Jordan has gone above and beyond in her undergraduate dissertation, which involves a collaborative effort with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue. She is tackling a critical issue in our criminal justice sector around recovering footwear marks from arson scenes. To do this Jordan has explored innovative use of coding and AI. This exploration is a rare and valuable contribution to the field, demonstrating her ability to think outside the conventional investigative methods.

Emma with Vice-Chancellor Professor Sarah Greer and Dean of the Faculty of Education and the Arts Cathy Gower

Faculty of Education and the Arts – Emma Antrobus

Emma is an outstanding student who is well on her way to achieving a first-class degree. Emma’s dissertation, which explores sex education and disability, is shaping up to be a most ambitious, incisive and intelligent study. Emma is a profoundly kind and warm person and because of this she brings out the best in people. Her contributions to seminars always move conversations to greater depths and for these reasons she secured the role of undergraduate representative of Winchester’s new research centre, CREATE (Centre of Research for Educational Action and Theory Exchange).

Natasha with Vice-Chancellor Professor Sarah Greer and Julia Lake, Deputy Chief Nurse at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Faculty of Health and Wellbeing – Natasha Evans

Natasha continuously goes above and beyond in her studies and has had a huge impact on the Nursing course at Winchester. She has been part of the Royal College of Nurses student council, Chair of the Student Staff Liaison Committee and helped set up the University’s Nursing Society. She finds time for all of these roles whilst maintaining an exemplary academic record and is an outstanding role model to her peers as well as students in other years.

Many congratulations to all of our winners.
