Biography

Ed, a civil servant, has served over 25 years in Defence Science Technology and Innovation, and is now Commissioner for four of MOD's STEM research programmes in AI, Autonomy and Cyber. Until recently, Ed was Chief Mathematician at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, part of the MOD. In this role Ed led a range of strategic initiatives across the organisation and worked widely across government, academia and industry.

Outside Dstl Ed is Chair of the Blue Apple Theatre, currently Artist in Residence at the University of Winchester. Ed is also on the Oversight Board of the Church of England's South Central Theological Education Institution. Ed holds Fellowships of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, the Royal Society of the Arts and holds Chartered Mathematician designation.

Ed’s interests include promoting the arts, humanities and sciences working together to create innovation and prosperity, and is passionate about increasing diversity in STEM, and brings all these interests together in his role as Visiting Professor of Innovation Strategy at Loughborough University and also writes and speaks widely on mathematical, historical and diversity topics.

Ed lives in Southern Hampshire.
