Biography

Ed is a mathematician employed by the government, currently commissioning research in AI, Cyber, AI and Data Science for the MOD. This follows a career in government research and STEM leadership roles, with previous roles including Chief Mathematician at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

Ed has the privilege of being Honorary Professor in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Birmingham, and Visiting Professor of Innovation Strategy at Loughborough University. Ed is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and holds Chartered Mathematician designation. Ed is Chair of the Alliance for Data Science Professionals which is setting professional standards for Data Scientists (the science that underpins AI) across the UK and US.

Until recently, Ed was Chair of Blue Apple Theatre, currently Artist in Residence at the University of Winchester, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts (FRSA). 

Ed's interests include promoting the arts, humanities and sciences working together to create innovation and prosperity, and is also passionate about increasing diversity in STEM, topics on which he writes and speaks on frequently, as well as being an active mentor.
