Ringing in the changes

A man pulling a bell rope

Following the award-winning renovation of the University Chapel in 2016, the old red white and blue chiming rope was looking tired and in need of replacement.

David Gilmore (B.Ed 1973 to 1977) generously offered to purchase a new rope in memory of his late mother, Ruth Gilmore. She herself had trained as a teacher at Charlotte Mason College in Ambleside in the late 1940s before taking up a teaching appointment in Alverstoke, Hampshire. The University Chaplain. Revd Chris Day (BA Theology 1998 to 2001) blessed the new rope in November, witnessed by members of the Old Wintonians Working Group.

It is hoped that it will continue to be used to summon staff and students to the Chapel for many years to come, and is a fitting memorial to a woman who was passionate about education.
