In the second in our short series of blogs to mark the holy month of Ramadan (12 April - 12 May), Tasnim Husain Curtis, a Muslim and Senior Lecturer in the University's Institute of Education, and Vice-Chancellor The Reverend Professor Elizabeth Stuart discuss together the latter's solidarity fast.
Our Vice Chancellor Liz Stuart completed a solidarity fast on Monday 19 April, which was the eighth day of Ramadan, in support of Muslim brothers and sisters both in our University and across the globe.
Liz did Suhoor (breakfast before the fast - taken before dawn) on her own. She broke her fast (Iftar) in the traditional way with me. Liz and I broke our fasts with a simple prayer and a delicious date. Liz talked honestly about how the day of fasting went for her.
It was a delightful exchange and made me reflect on how the simple acts of taking the time to understand, to share, and to be present can interrupt the potential barriers of position, race and religion. Sharing the fast and Iftar was unifying in a way that I had not experienced before. I invite you to watch our Iftar and maybe join us in completing a fast for Ramadan either this year or next.
