The University of Winchester's state-of-the-art gym has been shortlisted for a National Fitness Award for the outstanding service it offers to its users.
The gym is one of six fitness and leisure centres - and the only university - shortlisted for the Customer Service Award 2017. The National Fitness Awards, now in their eighth year, recognise achievement and excellence in all corners of the fitness industry and are organised by Script Events with WorkOut magazine.
There are around 850 members of the University gym, including students, staff and members of the local community. It offers a range of strength and cardio equipment and also runs fitness classes including yoga, Insanity, stretch and circuits.
Phil Malatesta, Sports Operations and Participation Manager, said: "Our fitness team excels at customer service and with 850 members, the staff are constantly supported in training sessions where enhancing our gym goers' experience is a priority.
"Customer service isn't just about going the extra mile, it is about ensuring our members always have the best experience. We offer professional advice to members about their wellbeing and personal fitness goals and we hold regular workshops and challenges which help to build up a rapport between staff and members. We're also very aware of our duty of care, especially as some of our members are away from home and from their families for the very first time."
David Chetwynd, Sports Operational Superviser, who successfully put the University gym forward for the award, highlighted in the nomination that: "Positive feedback from gym members has highlighted the improvement the current management team has achieved, in particular Phil who has successfully steered the direction of the gym over the past 24 months."
Over the next few weeks, the judging panel will carry out on-site surveys of a cross-section of members to get their opinions about Winchester's facilities and staff.
The winners of this year's National Fitness Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Leicester on 1 December. Phil Malatesta, David Chetwynd and Helen Thomas, Sports Facilities and Development Manager, will be attending the awards ceremony.
