February at the University of Winchester was a month of celebrations, new partnerships and good deeds. Read our highlights below.
We signed a partnership agreement with Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust
This month, our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joy Carter, and Alex Whitfield, Chief Executive of Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust (HHFT), signed an agreement that will see both organisations work together to increase research and education opportunities
The agreement formalises the existing partnership between HHFT and the University which began in April 2013 with the establishment of the Hampshire Collaboration for Health Research and Education in which both institutions are equal partners.
Our Finance department won an award
We were delighted to be recognised as Best Newcomer in the WPM Annual Awards.
WPM Education provides the University online income collection system. The award reflects the University’s significant progress in improving our students’ experience by allowing them to make payments more easily online.
The University was also shortlisted for the Innovation and Effectiveness award for providing an outstanding example in the use of online collections in the HE sector.
We celebrated the fourth annual Hampshire Pride
On Saturday 24 February, several hundred members and supporters of the LGBT community came together in Winchester for the Hampshire Pride Festival.
Professor Elizabeth Stuart, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Senior Diversity Champion at the University of Winchester said: “The University has been a proud supporter of Hampshire Pride since its inception four years ago. Encouraging diversity and inclusion on campus and across the city continues to be very important to the University so we were delighted to support the event again this year.”
In addition to supporting the event, Winchester Student Union also ran the official Hampshire Pride After Party.
Our students did good deeds across the city
Students from the University engaged in a wide variety of voluntary and social action opportunities as part of Student Volunteering Week in late February.
During the week, students helped local residents tidy up and plant trees across the city, served the elderly at the LinkAges Tea Party, and built three houses for hedgehogs on campus. Students also got involved in a variety of one day volunteering opportunities with organisations in Winchester.
Student volunteering week provides students with the opportunity to engage with your community whilst developing key skills for work and life.
We built upon a partnership set to inspire social workers of the future
We were delighted to welcome another cohort of aspiring social workers onto the Step Up to Social Work programme through our growing partnership with South Coast Regional Partnership.
The programme enables students to gain a postgraduate diploma while learning in a work-based environment, encouraging high-achieving graduates or career changers with experience working with children to become qualified social workers. The University also supports the partnership and all those taking part in the training by offering master classes focusing on contemporary social work practice in our society.
Blog highlight: See photos from our recent climate-change themed exhibition
On 3 February, students, staff and members of the public took part in a unique multimedia art exhibition to inspire the community to consider the impact of climate change.
The exhibition was inspired by the award-winning album This Changes Everything by Splendid Fred, the University of Winchester’s record label. The exhibition hosted a range of pieces by in different mediums including art, soundscapes, sculpture and film.
