August saw a strong focus on our local community, with the University co-hosting the Winchester Paralympic Personal Bests event and supporting charities in the city through our Bag it Up campaign. We also celebrated awards for members of our own community. See our highlights below.
University of Winchester academic Lim Teoh has been recognised with a prestigious fellowship in recognition of his commitment to excellence in learning and teaching.

Items no longer needed by students heading home for the summer have been given a second life, benefitting city charities including Winchester Basics Bank, The Winchester Beacon, Trinity Winchester, Hampshire Paws and Emmaus.
Over a tonne of clothing, bedding, kitchen and homewares, and store cupboard essentials - more than 175 bags in total - were donated through our annual Bag it Up campaign to help people in need in the city. Find out more.

On 18 August, we congratulated thousands of students who received their A-level results and confirmed places for those who have chosen to study with us, with a special message from Vice-Chancellor Professor Sarah Greer.
We look forward to welcoming our new and returning students in September!
The #TeamHannah Band and Singers has recorded Primal Scream's Movin' on Up as their third fundraising single in aid of Shelter.
Hannah Williams, a Winchester graduate and former Director of Foundation Music at the University, was a finalist in ITV's The Voice in 2021.
The recording is the third part of a project born from her time on the show. She worked with the University of Winchester Music Centre and 160 singers and instrumentalists to record the Primal Scream cover.
Two previous videos have raised more than £1,600 for Trinity Winchester and Shelter by encouraging vocalists and instrumentalists to raise £20 to take part.
Four local schools - Stanmore Primary School, Winnall Primary School, Twyford St Mary's CofE Primary School and Western CE Primary School - were involved with the final video. Find out more.
Winchester alumnus Varun Sharma was the co-star in Brown Boys Swim, recently performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and which won the prestigious Festival Popcorn writing award 2022 for best new play.
Written by Karim Khan, Brown Boys Swim is a coming-of-age tale about two south Asian teenagers who learn to swim in order to impress girls at a classmate's pool party.
Varun (whose stage name is Varun Raj) graduated in 2013 with a BA (Hons) in Drama and Psychology. He plays Kash, described by a reviewer as 'a gloriously boastful ball of energy'. The annual Paralympic Personal Bests event took place at the University Sports Stadium and the Sport and Leisure Park this month - 10 years on from the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
Organised by Winchester City Council in partnership with the University, Everyone Active and Winchester Go LD, the event provides children and adults with learning and physical disabilities the chance to take part in a day full of sporting activities and encourages ongoing participation in sport and physical activity on a more regular basis.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement) Sam Jones said: "What an honour it has been to host this fantastic community sports event at the Winchester Sports Stadium and see so many people try out a new sport for the first time."
Congratulations to our fantastic artist-in-residence Blue Apple Theatre, which was shortlisted for the Lloyds Bank British Business Excellence Awards in the Local Business of the Year Award category.
The shortlisting recognises their innovative response to the huge challenges faced during the Covid-19 pandemic, during which Blue Apple transformed itself and the way it worked, embracing digital delivery to ensure that isolated participants could still engage in regular performing arts sessions and maintain social contact.
A special launch event at the Confer education centre in London marked the publication of a new book edited by University of Winchester Centre for Animal Welfare Professors Andrew Knight and Paula Sparks.
The Routledge Handbook of Animal Welfare draws on the expertise of 50 authors, many of whom are world leaders in their fields and covers virtually all contemporary animal welfare issues, including animal ethics, law and human behavioural change. The book has been hailed in a review in Psychology Today as meriting "worldwide attention".
Speakers included Peter Egan, actor, animal advocate, and recipient of an Honorary Doctorate for services to animal welfare from the University of Winchester.
This month we were glued to the TV watching athletes and sportspeople competing in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
