For two weeks each year at the end of February and start of March, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across the UK come together to share the stories of the people who grow our food and drinks. mine our gold and who grow the cotton in our clothes, people who are often exploited and underpaid.
In Fairtrade Fortnight 2022, we will highlight the growing challenges that climate change brings to farmers and workers in the communities Fairtrade works with. The facts are straightforward. Farmers and workers in countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia and Honduras, who have done the least to contribute to climate change, are disproportionately affected by it. They have told us that:
- Climate change is one of their biggest challenges right now.
- Low prices for their crops mean that they are struggling to fight back.
- Only with more money will they feel equipped to meet their everyday needs and deal with the challenges they face from climate change.

Eastleigh College Events
We have teamed up with the event management students at Eastleigh college to provide a number of Fairtrade events during week 2 of Fairtrade Fortnight. They will be hosting the Big Brew, Fairtrade Taste Test, Fairtrade Quiz, Wine Tasting and Sports Challenges across the five days.
Big Brew
On Monday 28 February, Tuesday 1 March, Thursday 3 March and Friday 4 March, we are hosting the Food on Campus Big Brew in the King Alfred Centre Food Hall from 10am -2pm. Come down for free Fairtrade tea, coffee and homemade cake, all completely free!
Fairtrade Coffee, it’s how millions of us start our day, and a companion to countless conversations. An estimated 1.6 billion cups of coffee are brewed every single day. Worldwide, over 125 million people depend on coffee for their livelihoods, yet many are unable to earn a reliable living from this beloved and valuable crop.
Around the world, 25 million smallholders produce 70-80 percent of the world’s coffee, which is one of the reasons why Fairtrade focuses its efforts on small producer organisations.
Fairtrade Taste Test
On Wednesday 2 March, we are hosting a Fairtrade Taste Test in the King Alfred Centre Food Hall from 10:30am -12:30pm. Come down for a free Fairtrade Chocolate tasting to sample milk and dark chocolate varieties from Divine, Tony’s Chocolonely and Green and Blacks. You can also test your knowledge with our cola tasting, where you can sample 3 colas and see if you can identify which one is Fairtrade.
Chocolate is one of the UK’s favourite foods. The farmers growing cocoa, however, do not reap the rewards of its popularity, with many experiencing extreme poverty. Together with farmers and businesses, Fairtrade is working for a fairer future. Millions of cocoa farmers work extremely hard, under gruelling conditions, yet do not earn a living income. On average, cocoa farmers earn just 6% of the final value of a bar of chocolate.
Sports Challenges
On Monday 28 February, Tuesday 1 March, Wednesday 2 March and Thursday 3 March, we are hosting three sports challenges between 10:30am – 12:30pm on the Dytche. Come down and test your skills at:
Basketball Hoops – Shoot as many hoops as you can within the time limit.
Bean Bag Toss – Throw as many bean bags at the target as you can within the time limit.
Penalty Shootout – Score as many points in the goal as you can within the time limit.
Come down and test your skills with the person at the top of each of the leader boards on Thursday will earn themselves a Fairtrade prize.
Wine Tasting
On Wednesday 2 March, we are hosting a Fairtrade wine tasting in the King Alfred Centre Food Hall from 10:30am -12:30pm. Come down to see if you can identify the Fairtrade wine for your chance to win a bottle!
*Buying Fairtrade wine helps ensure that farmers and workers are receiving a fair price – as well as an additional premium to help their community invest in essential services such as education, sanitation and health care.
More than 50 manufacturers and plantations work with Fairtrade to make quality wine that makes a difference to people’s lives. More than 20.5 million litres of Fairtrade wine were drunk in the UK in 2019. So, raise your glass of Fairtrade wine – every bottle that you buy can have an impact on the lives of the farmers and workers who grew the grapes.
Fairtrade Film Event
On Wednesday 1 March, visit the Vault on Level 1 of the King Alfred Centre between 4:30pm and 6pm to watch a Fairtrade inspired film. There will be a selection of free Fairtrade refreshments available and Fairtrade popcorn for you to enjoy with the movie. You will also receive a free Fairtrade goodie bag, filled with Fairtrade information, food and drink for you to enjoy.
Tea is the world’s most popular drink (after water), with about 70,000 cups drunk every second. From its origins as an ancient medicinal crop in China, tea has spread far and wide – many of us simply can’t face the day without a cup.
The multi-billion-dollar tea industry employs millions of people but working conditions and earnings for the producers are often dire. Fairtrade works with workers on plantations as well as with smallholder farmers to bring Fairtrade tea to consumers around the world.
Fairtrade Banana Giveaway
On Wednesday 23 February and Friday 25 February between 8am - 2.30pm in the King Alfred Centre Food Hall, we will be giving away Fairtrade bananas to all our customers to highlight the importance of buying Fairtrade.
They’re one of the most popular fruits in the world, and many people can’t contemplate a morning (or a morning run!) without one. Bananas are also a staple food for millions of people, and a major export that forms the cornerstone of many countries’ economies. Bananas are grown on both small-scale farms as well as large plantations. But a highly competitive market creates price pressure on bananas, ultimately putting the squeeze on banana growers.
Fairtrade banana producers are paid a Fairtrade Minimum Price that acts as a safety net against falling prices. This price varies by region, factoring in local conditions and aiming to cover the average costs of sustainable production.
The Fairtrade Standards are designed to improve employment conditions and protect the rights of workers in the large plantations where the majority of export bananas are grown. In recent years Fairtrade has undertaken pioneering work to define and progress toward living wages for banana workers.

Twice a week in the King Alfred Centre Food Hall, enjoy a free sample made with Fairtrade ingredients including chickpea and sultana tagine and Fairtrade mushroom aranchi. Available to collect for free from Tastes of the World in the King Alfred Centre Food Hall between 11:30am 2:30pm
Pancake Day
On Tuesday 1 March, it’s Pancake Day. From 11:30am – 2pm, we will have pancakes available in the King Alfred Centre Food Hall with a selection of Fairtrade toppings to top your pancake including sugar, chocolate sauce and golden syrup.
Fairtrade Lunch Special
On Tuesday 22 February and Thursday 24 February in the West Downs Centre Food Hall, we have a special hot lunch dish made from Fairtrade ingredients including Fairtrade pasta, rice and mango chutney.
Fairtrade Smoothies
On Friday 25 February, we have some delicious and refreshing free Fairtrade Banana & Orange smoothies. Made with Fairtrade bananas, Fairtrade apple juice and orange juice.
Hot Puddings
The perfect way to warm you up on a cold and rainy day! Twice a week in the King Alfred Centre Food Hall, enjoy a warming hot pudding made with Fairtrade ingredients including chocolate chip sponge and syrup sponge.
The world’s appetite for cocoa is booming. And yet cocoa farmers around the world often struggle to make a living, despite their position as the source of a highly prized commodity.
Widespread poverty, deforestation, gender inequality, child labour and forced labour are persistent problems in the cocoa sector which could ultimately destroy it. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Fairtrade is helping to change the cocoa business for the better in a number of ways. When you choose Fairtrade cocoa and chocolate, you are supporting this drive for change and Fairtrade cocoa farmers are paid a Fairtrade Minimum Price for their goods, which acts as a safeguard when market prices drop.
