Biography

I have pursued a career in archaeology since first exploring my growing interest in the discipline through a 5th form work experience opportunity at Wroxeter in 1989. I have co-directed the Anglo-Georgian Expedition to Nokalakevi in western Georgia since 2002, an archaeological collaboration with colleagues at the Georgian National Museum, Tbilisi, and have been at the University of Winchester since 2008 where I teach on the BA, BSc and MA programmes, as well as supervising PhD research students (see below).

In addition to the archaeology of western Georgia, my research also concerns understanding the social implications of archaeology, such as working conditions and employment, and the impact that engagement in archaeology and heritage can have on mental health and wellbeing. I am a lead collaborator on the AMPHORA project, funded by the UKRI MARCH Network, which produced a series of toolkits to support the delivery of therapeutic heritage-related activities. Alongside over 40 peer-reviewed publications on a variety of topics I am the author of "The Invisible Diggers" (2009; 2nd Edition 2012); editor of "Nokalakevi-Tsikhegoji-Archaeopolis: Archaeological Excavations 2001–2010" (2014); and co-editor of "Rescue Archaeology: Foundations for the Future" (2015), "Archaeology, Heritage and Wellbeing: Authentic, Powerful, and Therapeutic Engagement with the Past" (2022), and "On the shoulders of Prometheus: International collaboration and the archaeology of Georgia" (2023).

I was Undergraduate Programme Leader for Archaeology from 2013 to 2018, before being appointed Research Excellence Framework Unit of Assessment Lead for Archaeology (C15) in 2018, and for Social Work and Social Policy (C20) in 2022.
