Biography

Elwyn Cox is Senior Lecturer in Sports management. He worked as a hybrid keeping a foot in industry whilst also lecturing part-time from 1985. Initially this was in Further Education on BTEC, HND/HNC and Professional courses such as the Institute of Exports, Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply and Institute of Credit Managers. Having completed his MA in Marketing in 1998 while working as a business consultant he moved into Higher Education lecturing on a part-time basis. From this he joined what is now the University of Winchester in 2004 as a member of the team delivering the professional qualifications of the Chartered Institute of Marketing through evening study classes. This led to an expanded contract over time within the Business and Sports departments, before joining Sport on a full-time basis from July 2009.

During his time at Winchester, Elwyn has been very active on committees, including chairing Faculty Learning and Teaching committee, representative at Senate L&T, and member of Faculty RKE committee. He has also worked on other supporting groups including Widening Participation, the Programme Leaders' Forum and the Admissions Monitoring Group.

Elwyn is the Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Sport Business and Marketing programme. He also taught on the MA Sport and Society looking at contemporary global themes within sport.

Elwyn was very active in designing modules for the first MSc MBA qualifications to be offered in the Faculty of Business, Law and Sport. He is presently constructing an exciting postgraduate Masters programme in Sport Sponsorship and Marketing that is keenly anticipated.

He has been heavily involved as Programme Leader in the most recent series of validations both entirely within the Sports and Exercise Department and also through the innovative use of a combination of Winchester Business School modules to widen further the employability opportunities. The Sport Business and Marketing degree to run from September 2015 is rich in new modules and contemporary topics to produce an exceptionally attractive proposition to incoming students. For those who wish to continue further with their study of the ever-expanding business of sport the MSc Sport Sponsorship and Marketing will uniquely provide a welcome continuation.

Of continuing interest is the idea of teaching shared modules with an American university - Eastern Illinois. Elwyn visited there in 2011 where he presented at all levels across Sport and Business Faculties. The innovative USP of these modules would be to consider sport topics from both British and American perspectives. Subsequently he has been a strong supporter of their student visits to Winchester over the last three years and was delighted when the module that he shares with John Batten was voted the Best Module of the Year by the Student Union in 2015. Alongside John Batten he is also exploring other viable destinations and links.

His subject knowledge and enthusiasm have been recognised both by the Open University for whom he has contributed on validation panels and Coventry University for whom he is External Examiner. He also contributed to a number of colleges across the south of England for seven years as Access Moderator in Business Management and Marketing.

Publications

Elwyn has been very active with the Chartered Institute of Marketing, both running the programme at Winchester and also being involved in an overhaul of the curriculum. From this he was asked to co-author their official coursebook for Project Management in Marketing.

Elwyn has contributed a chapter on the Funding of Sport under the editorship of well-known sports author Terri Byers – published by Sage in November 2015.

A review of student group work was published on the HEA website in 2012 as part of a funded project that included a symposium at Winchester for ideas and dissemination. This was the basis for a workshop and presentation at the Association of Business Schools annual conference that same year.

A greater emphasis on publication of research carried out independently, through the use of students as Research Assistants and in conjunction with Sabine Bohnacker-Bruce is a strategic priority for academic year 2013-14.

In May of 2015 he presented at an education conference in Athens on the subject of the student as customer. Within the university he has often contributed at Learning and Teaching days or at a Faculty Forum.
