Legal Advice Centre
A free community service offering legal advice in family law
The University of Winchester has teamed up with a firm of local solicitors to offer free legal advice sessions to the community.
Following a successful pilot, the Centre was established thanks to a partnership between the University of Winchester and the Winchester office of Dutton Gregory LLP Solicitors. Members of the community can book an advice session with a qualified lawyer who will provide initial oral legal advice on family law matters for free, ‘pro bono’. Our Law students volunteer to be on hand to assist and observe.
The University has become a full member of the national solicitors pro bono charity, LawWorks, which provides guidance and support to free law clinics.
The focus is on Family Law, specifically:
- Divorce / judicial separation / separation
- Financial matters arising from divorce/separation, including foreign property, trusts, businesses
- Dissolution of civil partnerships
- Child-related disputes, including residence, contact, relocation and abduction
- Grandparent contact
- Care proceedings, including fostering and adoption
- Cohabitation disputes
- Domestic abuse, including non-molestation and occupation orders
- Pre- and post-nuptial/cohabitation agreements
- Surrogacy / Parental Orders
Advice sessions last 30-40 minutes and must be pre-booked. No drop-in facility is possible.
Currently, the sessions will only provide initial oral legal advice. No representation or case work service is possible at this stage.
Advice sessions are term-time only; this semester, they will run on the afternoons of 11, 18 and 25 November and 2 and 9 December.
All appointments take place in person at the King Alfred Campus of the University. Sessions are available to University staff and students as well as members of the public.
