The Winton Society Awards 2022

In September this year the Winton Society saw the launch of the first ‘Winton Society Awards’, an event which recognised and celebrated the achievements of students, staff, and alumni. This year individuals were nominated across 5 categories in recognition of those who have made exceptional contributions in advancing their field, giving back to the community, or supporting the ongoing development of the University.   

Planning for the awards ceremony started back in January when a call was put out for nominations to be submitted highlighting the achievements and experiences of groups or individuals in the following categories: 

• Force for Good: Recognising those who give selflessly of their time and energy to benefit the greater good. A celebration of individuals or groups of alumni, staff or students who have had a positive impact on society whilst demonstrating University values. 
• Services to the University: Outstanding contribution of an alumni or group of alumni to the University community with a particular focus on volunteering outside of official roles.
• Emerging Talent: Recognising the achievements of recent graduates in their professional life through individual enterprise, entrepreneurial success, creativity and sporting excellence.
• Outstanding Contribution: Recognising the achievements of alumni who have shown great courage, resilience, and dedication in extraordinary circumstances.
• Lifetime Achievement: Honouring individuals who have shown dedication, commitment and sustained achievement over a long career.

We were delighted to receive a diverse and extensive range of nominations for members of the King Alfred College and University of Winchester community both past and present. Nominations were then carefully considered by the Alumni Strategy Group to be announced live at the Awards event. 

On receiving the award nominations, Naomi Irving (Alumni Engagement Manager) said:  

“It is inspirational to hear about the incredible impact our alumni are making in their professional field and communities. We are delighted that we have the opportunity to honour these achievements through the Winton Society Awards”. 

Shortlisted nominees, nominators and special guests were invited to the new West Downs Centre for an evening of celebration, reflection, and aspiration. The event featured tables adorned with heathers, a plant which commonly symbolises good luck and admiration, and an acoustic rendition of Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ by talented student musicians Manolis Roberts and Grace Dransfield. 

Vice Chancellor Professor Sarah Greer presented the awards and nominations were read out by members of the University’s Development and Alumni, and Executive Leadership teams. The winners are: 

• Force for Good Award: Adam White (Ph.D Sport, Exercise and Health, 2018)
• Services to the University Award: John McKenna (DipHE Social and Environmental Problems, 1988)
• Emerging Talent Award: Dimitrios Pallis (MA Theology, 2013)
• Outstanding Contribution Award: Tom Lowe (BA Archaeology and History, 2013)
• Lifetime Achievement Award: Sue Hayward (Primary Education, 1986)
