Anthropology with Foundation Year

Our Anthropology programme is a fascinating exploration of human societies, looking at present-day western and non-western groups, the biological aspects of humanity, and social development through time as seen in material culture.

This four-year course enables you to get to grips with questions commonly posed by anthropologists: How has evolution shaped us? What is culture? Do any universals of human behaviour exist?

Archaeology (with Foundation Year)

Classical Studies with Foundation Year

The ancient Greek and Roman worlds have given us an extraordinarily rich heritage of culture, literature, politics, philosophy, art, architecture and archaeology as well as paving the way for democracy, modern day sewers, underfloor heating and the calendar. Whatever you aspire to become – and Classical Studies students have conquered most fields – an understanding of the classical past gives you a keen lens through which to view the modern world.

Our BA in History is an immensely varied and rich course that gives you an in-depth view of the world and the contours and forces at play between politics, culture, economics, the environment, gender and religion.

Medieval History with Foundation Year

In Britain, we love our crumbling castles, noble cathedrals and bloody representations of the medieval age in popular culture. If you have a passion for history with a special interest in the Middle Ages, then this course is perfect for you.

Anthropology

From the Bronze Age to the Crusades and beyond, it’s an absorbing three-year journey exploring the archaeology and history of the British Isles, continental Europe and the Mediterranean.

Anthropology and Archaeology

By combining the disciplines of Anthropology and Archaeology we can think about the nature of humanity from the perspectives of biology, culture and objects. This course combines an anthropological approach to questions about what it means to be human with an archaeological perspective on the understanding of human societies and cultures.

Archaeological Practice

Archaeology unearths the stories of our past. It is the archaeologist’s job to discover and excavate sites and interpret the material recovered from them. Our Archaeological Practice course is the original vocational archaeology degree, and is specifically designed to give you the practical and technical skills necessary for a successful career in archaeology to that end.

Cultural Heritage and Resource Management

Cultural Heritage and Resource Management considers the wider place of heritage management in contemporary society and offers you the chance to undertake your own projects on a range of different subjects. You investigate the theory and practice of cultural heritage and resource management from both a British and a global approach.

History at Winchester concentrates on different geographical scales of history, including local and global perspectives. It gives you the opportunity to engage with a range of approaches to the study of history, examining a range of historical subjects from ancient history to the present.

Reconciliation

The Reconciliation programmes at Winchester draw on insights from a range of academic disciplines, case studies, and cultural and faith traditions from around the world. They give you a multidisciplinary introduction to the study and practice of reconciliation and peacebuilding, with the work and experience of St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace, Winchester Centre of Religion, Reconciliation and Peace and Embrace Dialogue informing their design.

Reconciliation and Peacebuilding

This course supports you in developing an in-depth understanding of diverse perspectives on peacebuilding and reconciliation. Drawing on the work of the Winchester Centre of Religion, Reconciliation and Peace and Embrace Dialogue, the course critically considers the complexities of interpersonal- and intercommunal conflict, peacebuilding and reconciliation, the influence of culture and religion and the connections between theory and practice.
