Jack Holmwood internship at Aldershot Town FC

Jack took the optional work placement module in his final year on BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science to do an internship as a Sport Scientist. Here he reflects on his valuable experience.

During my final year studies at the University of Winchester I have had the amazing opportunity to intern at Aldershot Town Football Club as an academy Sport Scientist. As we enter the business end of the season, it feels like a good time to reflect on the experiences I have gained this season.

The opportunity allowed me to transfer my theoretical understanding from my university degree into field settings. I lead physiological testing sessions to assess player performance and development including: agility T-tests, reaction timing, 1k time-trials, hamstring strength tests and more. Despite the challenges of physiological testing outside of lab conditions, I thoroughly enjoyed creating a competitive training environment for the players, helping to bring the best out of their physical capabilities. I was even able to further my learning through a visit to the Under Armour testing facilities inside Battersea power station.

Additionally, I experienced obtaining range of movement and GPS data, helping to inform on load management decisions and individual recovery protocols. Analysing this data was vital to reducing injury risk and helped me alter warm-ups, activation and strength and conditioning sessions.

Throughout my time I have been hugely helped by the multidisciplinary team at the club and am very grateful for the experiences and opportunities they have provided me with.

The skill I have developed throughout the 2025/26 season I'm sure will prove invaluable in my professional development! Here's to a successful end to the season and even more exciting opportunities!
