Supporting Ukraine

This page contains current activities and support planned in response to the invasion of Ukraine. As a University of Sanctuary, we are committed to working with others in Winchester to provide a safe and welcoming place of sanctuary for refugees.

We will be joined by colleagues from the University of Winchester, Winchester City of Sanctuary and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to discuss the support available for Ukrainian’s hosted locally.

The session will focus on the following:
Orientation including practical courses to support understanding British culture, understanding and navigating UK systems, job-hunting and develop skills.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) including how to navigate the many different resources and classes, alongside hints and tips on how to support learning as a host.

The meeting will be hosted by the University of Winchester and made available online via Microsoft Teams.

Ukrainian Sanctuary Scholarships and ESOL Provision

In September 2022, we welcomed seven Ukrainian Sanctuary Scholars onto our courses. All scholars were provided with a 100% tuition fee waiver, £1,000 bursary, designated student advisor and support via the English Language Teaching and Support Unit (ELTSU). We also invited local Ukrainians under the Homes for Ukraine to join our pre-sessional English Language courses for academic study and continue to host English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes for the local community, in partnership with Winchester City of Sanctuary.

We continue to work closely with community partners to support access to higher education and ESOL. For more information please email Sanctuary@winchester.ac.uk
