FAQs

I’ve not been able to get work experience; can I still apply for Teaching or Health courses?

Whilst relevant work experience is ideal for some courses we understand that it has been difficult for some applicants to obtain during Covid-19. Even if you don’t have specific voluntary or paid experience prior to applying, we will consider an application if your application demonstrates.

  • You have made an informed choice to embark on the career – understand what the career entails and what the course offers.
  • For health course you have shown the NHS care values through your studies and have examples in your personal statement and demonstrated at interview.

The focus is on you showing us you have the relevant skills and attributes for the career.

I’m applying as an independent candidate who should write my reference?

There are a couple of ways to get a reference if you’re applying independently. If your previous school or college is happy to complete a reference, in the ‘Options’ section on the UCAS application select ‘ask a registered school, college or centre to write a reference only’. This route needs a buzzword from the school or college – so you’d have to discuss it with them.

Alternatively, you can enter your referee’s contact details in the reference section. UCAS will send them an email with instructions on what to do. If you want to do this, make sure you ask your referee if they’ll be able to provide you with a reference before you send them a request. Once they’ve completed it, UCAS email you, and the reference section will be marked with a red tick.

I think I might be able to apply for a Compact Scheme. What does this mean?

The University of Winchester is committed to encouraging and supporting all students who have academic potential and ability to progress to higher education.

We have therefore formed compact partnerships with a number of schools and colleges, for further information see our Compact Information

I’m applying as a mature learner (over the age of 21), what do I have to do?

We welcome applicants who are over 21 and many have a wide range of qualifications and experience. If you are able to demonstrate recent study at Level 3 or above, for example achieving one A-level, then you may not need to fulfil the standard entry requirements for your chosen programme. Applications from mature students are considered on their own individual merit, and work and other experience can be taken into consideration. Take a look at our Mature Learner Guide

I gained my results in last year but have resat/gained other qualifications how does this affect my application?

If you are applying for the first time with results from last year or resits, your application will be considered alongside all other applicants and whether you receive an offer will depend on the strength of your application.

We will accept the highest achieved result of any resit exams, providing you receive the results by the end of August.

If you still have any further questions please ask our UK Student Recruitment Team any questions you may have about applying to university.
