Biography

Dr Matt Smith is a BPS-chartered, HCPC-registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist. He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Winchester in September 2018, and is subject lead for the BSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology.

After originally working as a primary school teacher, Matt completed an MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology at Bangor University, and PhD in Psychology at the University of Chichester. On completing his PhD (awarded 2009), Matt worked as a lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Chichester before joining the University of Winchester in 2018.

Areas of expertise

Dr Smith welcomes enquiries about research supervision; his areas of supervision are: social psychology of sport, specifically focussing on leadership and group dynamics. This includes research examining effective leadership practice in different contexts, and research considering enhancing group functioning. He is also interested in supervising research considering the impacts of head injuries in sport on the family members of those affected, He is particularly interested in supervising research with a more qualitative focus.
