To mark International Women's Day 2021 today (Monday 8 March), Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester Professor Joy Carter CBE, DL, and Joyce D'Silva, Ambassador Emeritus of global farm animal welfare group Compassion in World Farming, share their personal experiences of leadership, in line with this year's theme of women in leadership.
From overcoming challenges and surmounting the perceptions of others, they discuss what it is like to take on senior leadership roles as a woman.
Joyce D'Silva was Chief Executive of Compassion from 1991-2005. She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Winchester in 2015 in recognition of her work for the welfare of animals.
In 2015, the University cemented its links with Compassion in World Farming with a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening academic bonds between the two institutions and has a similar strategic partnership with the International Foundation for Animal Welfare. In 2016, the University established the Centre for Animal Welfare which undertakes education, research and public engagement in animal welfare and related fields. Philip Lymbery, Chief Executive of Compassion in World is a Visiting Professor at the University of Winchester.
In 2017, the University proudly supported the Extinction and Livestock Conference, a major international event exploring the impact of livestock production on the planet which was organised by Compassion in partnership with WWF.
The University, which has Compassion as a core value, is currently developing additional Animal Welfare courses to produce graduates capable of leading the development of sustainable solutions to animal welfare issues.
About International Women's Day
International Women's Day falls on 8 March each year and is celebrated across the world. Originally, its aim was to provide a forum for women to campaign for equality and women's rights. Over time, it has evolved and now each year, thousands of events are held throughout the world to recognise the progress that has been made, to inspire women and to celebrate their achievements.
The theme for 2021 is 'Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world' highlighting the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and highlights the gaps that remain.
