Students from the University of Winchester’s Elite Sports Programme achieved their best-ever results at the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) National Indoor Athletics Championships in Sheffield earlier this month where two competitors made finals.

Harry Ware came through two rounds of the 800m to finish sixth in the final after earlier recording an indoor personal best of 1 min 50.75 secs.

George Asprey came seventh in the shot with a season’s best putt of 12.78m.

Freya Hampshire finished fifth in her heat of the 400m and Callum Lorimer was ninth in his 3000m heat.

Six runners from Winchester took part in the BUCS National Cross-Country Championship in Cardiff where Christina Wigley and Libbi Soper competed in the women’s short course race and Will Avey-Hebditch, Adam Homes, Louis Forster and Callum Lorimer ran in the men’s long course event.

The Elite programme which currently accepts students in track and field and cross country, under the tutelage of Head Coach Andy Fisher, offers opportunities to represent the University at three National BUCS events  - the third big event  is the  National Athletics Championships (outdoor) which will be held in Manchester from the 3-5 May.

Andy Fisher commented: “The Elite Sports Programme is attracting talented athletes to the University and it is fantastic to see them shine on the National stage.  The programme and the performance of those within it will continue to grow and I take my hat off to the dedication of those combining their studies with the demands of Elite Sport.”
