The University of Winchester's ground-breaking work in sustainability and social responsibility in education has placed the institution second in the UK for Sustainable Development Goal 4, Quality Education, in the global University Impact Rankings 2021 compiled by Times Higher Education (THE).
The rankings recognise universities worldwide for their social and economic impact on society, based on their success in delivering the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were adopted in 2016 to provide a framework for sustainably developing the world.
Winchester is tied at 61 for Quality Education (SDG 4), second in the UK just behind the University of East London and in the upper quartile of institutions globally. The impact ranking for SDG 4 measures universities' contribution to early years and lifelong learning, their teaching, research and their commitment to inclusive education. SDG 4 aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The Reverend Professor Elizabeth Stuart, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester, said: "The Unite Nations' Sustainable Development Goals are our world's call to action on the most important challenges facing people and the planet across the globe.
"At Winchester, our vision is to shape a better world through everything we do, driven by our values and the ambition, wisdom and impact of our students and staff. Being placed among the world's top universities for social impact in these rankings is a fantastic reflection of how our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals is translating into tangible action, helping to transform the world we live in."
Winchester is also tied in the 301-400 band in the overall global Impact Rankings, out of 1,115 institutions from 94 countries and regions.
