The University of Winchester is joining the call to #PressforProgress for a more inclusive, gender equal world on International Women's Day on Thursday 8 March.
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The international theme this year is #PressforProgress with everyone invited to pledge to take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly.
The University is marking the event with a programme of activities, ranging from an art exhibition, an open mic night and an evening of theatre, dance and film presented by Stormcloud Arts and Theatre. The programme also includes an event hosted by the British Federation of Women Graduates. Choices and Challenges in Media and Education features three speakers discussing the challenges and choices they have faced as international women, including Rowan Kerek Robertson, former head of social media at the BBC and iPlayer.
Professor Joy Carter CBE, Vice-Chancellor of the University said: "International Women's Day is an important opportunity for us to celebrate the achievements of women, who make huge social, economic, cultural, and political contributions all around the world.
"At Winchester, we strive to respect and value difference and seek greater justice and opportunity where inequality too often still exists. We want to help contribute to a world where everyone experiences how they matter as individuals and is able flourish and thrive, whoever they are. Women here at the University, from academics to students, staff to volunteers, are hugely valued for the work they do to make our University and the world around us better."
