Professor Joy Carter DL, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester, has been recognised in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List with a CBE for services to Higher Education.
The University of Winchester – shortlisted for University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards 2017 – has nearly doubled in size since Professor Carter joined as Vice-Chancellor in 2006.
“Universities have the power to transform lives,” commented Professor Carter. “I truly believe in the value of higher education and the importance of working to improve access and long-term success for under-represented groups.
“I am incredibly touched to receive such an honour and would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues at Winchester who share my vision and work alongside me to create such a special, values-driven University.”
Professor Carter is currently Chair of GuildHE, a Deputy Lieutenant for Hampshire, Patron of six local and national charities, and sits on the boards of the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) and Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).
She is a strong advocate for all aspects of equality and social justice, and has a particular interest in widening participation. She actively champions social mobility – from previously contributing to Government policy via the Social Mobility Advisory Group to currently leading a new collaboration to improve social mobility into degree apprenticeships – as well as ensuring the University fully supports the educational progression of children from military service families.
The University of Winchester has received numerous awards and accolades under the leadership of Professor Carter. These include The Social Enterprise Gold Mark, Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and two Green Gown Awards in 2017. In 2016, Winchester won the UK Excellence Award from the British Quality Foundation (BQF), received a commendation from the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for the enhancement of student learning opportunities, and won the Times Higher Education Widening Participation or Outreach Initiative of the Year Award.
