University co-hosts Hack Winchester!

23 Jul 2018

The University of Winchester and Winchester City Council are hosting Hack Winchester!, a special event which aims to find practical ways to use technology and data to support local businesses, attract and retain young people in the city and create co-working spaces.

A hack is an event where people with all sorts of skills and experience get together to solve shared problems. Hacks work best when there is a mixture of skills, ranging from - but not restricted to - coding, web designers, data analysis and visualisation, project management, starts ups and business experts. Local people are invited to join in this intensive day of pitching, coding, developing, and data wrangling. It's not just for techies and anyone who is interested can join in.

"As digital technologies permeate almost every facet of our lives, we need to embrace the opportunities and challenges of these new and emerging technologies using multidisciplinary approaches," said Dr Ben Sanders , Head of the Department of Digital Futures at the University of Winchester.

"We are delighted to work with Winchester City Council in using digital technologies to enhance business and enterprise in Winchester."

The University has extensive research and teaching expertise in digital technologies, including areas such as cyber security, artificial intelligence and robotics, computer science, data science, digital media design and development and mathematics.

Winchester City Council's Deputy Leader, Cllr Robert Humby, said: "The way that we interact is changing. Over the last decade, uptake of high speed broadband, smart phones, social media and open data has continued to increase. We welcome the opportunity to work with our partners at the University of Winchester to use digital technology to help Winchester be a premier business location."

Hack Winchester! takes place on Saturday 8 September from 9am to 6pm at the University's West Downs Centre, Romsey Road, Winchester, SO22 5HT. The hack is free to attend and refreshments will be provided throughout the day. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is being organised by AHA Digital on behalf of the University and the City Council.
