‘Second-hand needn’t be second best’ is the message of a charity fashion show involving students from the University of Winchester.
Seven students from the Fashion Business and Marketing course will be gaining some invaluable practical experience by helping to run the Charity Shop Chic Fashion Show, at the Brooks Centre as part of Winchester’s Green Week (21-29 September).
Organiser Sarah Sullivan, of Style Solutions by Sarah, hopes the event, to be held on 26 September, will inspire people to shop second-hand, recycle, re-wear and restyle rather than always buy new.
Marina Brkljac, Programme Leader and Lecturer in Fashion Business and Marketing said: “We are thrilled to have our students participating in Sara’s event.
“This is an invaluable opportunity for them to gain real-world industry experience, engage with the critical topic of sustainability, and support local charities. Through their involvement, they are gaining both knowledge and hands-on experience, preparing them to shape the future of fashion.”
Sarah Sullivan said: “I am thrilled to have the help and support of the Fashion Business and Marketing students again this year who are invaluable behind the scenes working hard dressing the models (under time pressure), organising the rails for the preloved sale afterwards and generally keeping things running smoothly backstage.
“This event is a fantastic opportunity for the community of Winchester to come together for some good causes and have fun!
Winchester Fashion Business and Marketing student Lauren Watson won the Rising Star award at the first Maven Awards this year after working after volunteering to help run the Charity Shop Chic Fashion Show in 2023.
Rachel Stenning, from the same course, also took part and was also shortlisted for the award.
Lauren will be part of the team again this year along with fellow third students Lauren Hills, Seren Evans, Lottie Coleman and second years, Marli Elliott, Lavinia Jeffery and Ellie Coakley.
