Students enjoy fur-ensics demo by Lab assistants Hoodie and Red

4 Mar 2025

Forensics students at the University of Winchester received a special visit from two four-legged experts recently.

Fire investigation search dogs Hoodie and Red demonstrated their skills to students on the Forensic Archaeology module.

The two Labradors were accompanied by their handlers Shaun Lincoln and Andy Earl from Hampshire Fire and Rescue.

Students heard that the dogs’ super sensitive noses were far better at finding ignitable liquids at crime scenes than electronic equipment.

After Shaun and Andy had explained the dogs’ specialist roles, Hoodie and Red then sniffed out some accelerants planted in the lecture room.

Then there was time at end of the lecture for the students to pet the dogs who lapped up the attention they were receiving.

“The event strengthens our continued partnership with local emergency services while providing students with valuable hands-on learning experiences,” said Selina Robinson, Senior Lecturer in Forensic Investigations at the University of Winchester.
