The University of Winchester has enhanced its teaching portfolio by launching a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy degree.
The three-year undergraduate course focuses on how to increase people’s wellbeing through manual therapy, exercise and education, providing an in-depth knowledge of the science behind the practice of physiotherapy. Using a curriculum developed in collaboration with local hospital trusts and service users, the programme also allows students to gain real insights from experienced and registered working practitioners and to apply their knowledge through hands-on work placements.
The Physiotherapy degree is based in a new state-of-the-art facility in Winchester High Street. Students will undertake practical aspects of their course and classroom-based learning in the fully-equipped space.
Professor Joy Carter CBE, Vice-Chancellor, University of Winchester, said: "This is an incredibly exciting development for the University and the city. With our strong reputation in health and wellbeing education and research and the national shortage of physiotherapists, this was a natural and important step for us to take. We are delighted to have just welcomed our first cohort of students onto the course and into our stunning new teaching space on the High Street.”
Dr Steven Ryall , Programme Leader for BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, said: “Physiotherapists play an important role in aiding people affected by injury, illness or disability to manage their health and recovery. This new course will give students the contemporary skills they need to provide the high-quality, evidence-based care they need to help people get back to living their lives.”
The course was launched by Professor Joy Carter at an event on 21 September at the new physiotherapy facilities. The event welcomed local MP Steve Brine and a number of partners from local hospital trusts including Alex Whitfield, CEO at Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust, and Beverley Harden, Allied Health Professional (AHP) Lead at Health Education England.
BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, allowing those who complete the course to be eligible to register as a physiotherapist with the Health and Care Professions Council.
