In these challenging and uncertain times, how can business and management education contribute to the creation of a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable world?
This important question will be tackled by Carole Parkes, Professor of Responsible Management Education at the University of Winchester Business School (a PRME Champion School) and Special Advisor to the UN for PRME, at her inaugural lecture on 28 March.
Higher education institutions and business and management schools play a key role in shaping the mind sets and skills of future leaders and can be powerful drivers of corporate sustainability. The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) is a United Nations (UN) backed initiative that engages business and management schools to ensure they provide future leaders with the skills needed to support the UN’s goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all, which are known as the Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG).
During her talk, Professor Parkes will explore PRME’s vision to realise these goals through responsible management education. She will showcase the ground-breaking work taking place in educational institutions in Winchester and across the world and discuss the challenges they face.
Professor Parkes said: “We all have the capacity to make a difference, whether that is in our work or in our communities and whether that is in our own lives or the lives of others. In my talk, I will highlight how the higher education sector can empower future leaders to embrace this and create a fairer and more sustainable world.”
Carole Parkes is Professor of Responsible Management Education at the University of Winchester Business School and is a Special Advisor to the UN for PRME. She has both a business and an academic background. In July 2017, at the 10th Anniversary PRME Global Forum UN Reception, professor Parkes was presented with a PRME Pioneer Award ‘for her leadership and commitment to the development of PRME’ and her appointment as Special Advisor to the UN was announced.
Professor Parkes is an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Management Education and is an editor for Greenleaf Publishing and Sage publications. She is an Inaugural Fellow of the Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges. Professor Parkes was previously Director of Social Responsibility and Sustainability at Aston University, where she developed and led ethics, responsibility and sustainability across all schools in the University. She was also invited to be the Christopher Chair in Business Ethics at Dominican University in Chicago and a ‘Researcher in Residence’ at PRME in New York.
