The University of Winchester’s record label has been nominated for an international Green Gown Award for its climate change-themed album.
The album This Changes Everything, features 11 original tracks created by University students and staff through Splendid Fred Records. Released in 2016, songs include King of Horror, a rock track about the oil and waste affecting the planet; Lost, a track inspired by human apathy toward the environment, and Some Day, which questions our reluctance to bring about change if it involves personal sacrifice. All proceeds raised by the album were donated to local sustainability charity WinACC, and global aid charity OXFAM.
The album received an award for student engagement in the UK Regional Green Gown Awards in 2017. As a result, it has now been nominated for an International Green Gown Award in the same category and it will be judged against initiatives from across the world.
The International Green Gown Awards recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges around the world. The Awards cover all aspects of educational institutions – from their teaching and research, leadership, buildings and food to how students can benefit the quality of life in the communities around them. The Green Gown Awards are delivered on a region wide basis before the winner of each region goes head-to-head in the International Awards.
Splendid Fred label manager and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, Glenn Fosbraey said: “We are delighted to have received this nomination. Not only is it an honour for Winchester to be measured against universities from Australia and Japan, but these awards give us the opportunity to spread our message to a global audience. It’s an album about the world, so it’s great we can now reach more of it.”
Winners will be announced on 16 May.
