Grime artist Stormzy, England footballer Marcus Rashford and Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Bishop of Dover, all feature in an online exhibition of inspiring BAME leaders, launched online today by the University of Winchester to mark Black History Month.
Pen portraits of sixteen high-profile leaders, hailed as inspirational for their values, achievements and contribution to society, make up the exhibition. Those featured come from around the world and from a diverse range of professions and backgrounds, as well different eras of history, such as Nzingha Mbande (1583-1663), the African Queen of Ndongo, now Angola.
All the leaders were nominated by University students and staff members, whose reasons for proposing their choice is highlighted in the exhibition.
Nominating former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, Sam Jones said: “Mandela is one of the loudest voices for racial equality in my lifetime. His life and struggle for equality in South Africa not only ensured an end to the shocking policy of Apartheid but also opened up a new way of speaking truth about the value of all human life which still inspires us today.”
Other leaders featured include British poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, political activist Lord Simon Woolley and Nobel Peace Prize-winner Professor Wangari Maathi.
