Our academics produced reports on the impact of social media on our society and presented at a major animal welfare conference. Staff received awards and volunteered their time at major key events. And, of course, we were delighted to celebrate A level results day!

Early on 17 August, hundreds of thousands of students anxiously opened brown envelopes (or a digital equivalent!) to find out their A level results and we were delighted to confirm a new cohort of students on to our courses.
Congratulations to everyone who will be joining us later in September. We can’t wait to see you soon!
Academics from the Centre for Information Rights discussed the implications of ‘sharenting’ and ‘YouTube families’ on the privacy and best interests of young children in a new report.
Amongst its eight recommendations, the report calls for young children to have an independent right to privacy and endorses the idea that social media and internet companies should have a duty of care to consider young children’s privacy and best interests in their operations.

Carole Parkes, Professor of Global Issues and Responsible Management, was made a special advisor to the United Nations for PRME (the Principles for Responsible Management Education). The prestigious honour recognises her work in advancing social responsibility and values in business teaching and research. She also received a PRME Pioneer Award for her active leadership and commitment in the development of PRME over the last ten years.

Jodie Anthony, a member of our Widening Participation team, volunteered her time at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships.
As part of her role, she escorted the Men’s 100m athletes to their medal ceremony and presented Jessica Ennis-Hill with her reallocated Gold Medal.
The University of Winchester offers all staff the chance to use one full paid working day a year to take part in voluntary, charity or community activities as part of our commitment to community engagement.
Jodie said: “It was a once in a lifetime experience (or twice having been a Gamesmaker as well!) that wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the university’s Employer Supported Volunteer scheme.”
Five students on the Fashion Marketing and Media course and Dr Savithri Bartlett, Senior Research Fellow, at the University of Winchester joined more than 50 academics presenting at the Oxford Summer School on the Ethics of Fur.
The event was the first of its kind to interrogate the ethics of producing farming and trade in animal fur. During the event, Dr Bartlett and her students gave two presentations, one about the pro-fur influences on London Fashion Week, and the other on the cultural and historical context of fur, looking at Sumptuary laws dating back to Henry VII.
