Dr Jo Batey is a Senior Fellow in Knowledge Exchange (Sport and Exercise Psychology). She has been teaching at the University of Winchester since 1998. Her undergraduate degree at Roehampton was followed by an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Exeter where she also lectured part-time. Her PhD examined the impact of expectancy effects on the feedback provided on student work. Specifically it explored whether gender and/or ethnicity (as inferred by the student name on an assignment) resulted in biased feedback.
Jo has been a BASES-accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist since 2005 and became a Chartered Scientist in 2013. She was integral in driving the creation of the department's Sport and Exercise Consultancy Unit (SECU), which provides sport and exercise science support to athletes of all levels. Jo is an experienced practitioner who has worked at International level with the Great Britain archery Olympic development squad. She has also worked extensively with sports teams including the Royal Navy rugby union team and the British Armed Forces Mountaineering team, various football academies, national league hockey, regional netball and regional swimming. She has also worked with individual performers in professional rugby union, tennis, rowing, archery, swimming, fencing, diving, netball and triathlon.
Jo has published in a diverse number of areas including applied sport psychology, women's experiences in sport, career-ending injury and expectancy effects.
