Frequently asked questions for Students

Am I eligible to attend graduation?

You will be eligible to attend the October 2024 graduation ceremonies if you:

  • Have successfully completed a full programme of undergraduate study, including Pass Degrees, Foundation Degrees and Higher National awards, or a recognised postgraduate award; and
  • Have formally completed all required elements of your course and received your final exam board letter confirming your degree by 2 September 2024; and
  • Have no outstanding financial debt to the University as of 2 September 2024 (please refer to the Fee Regulations for further guidance: Payment of University Fees - Regulations 2024).

Please note that Certificate of Higher Education and Diploma of Higher Education awardees are not eligible to attend graduation.

Where will the 2024 ceremonies take place?

All 2024 graduation ceremonies will be held in Winchester Cathedral, with all other graduation activity taking place in the Guildhall.

I NO LONGER HAVE ACCESS TO MY UNIMAIL ACCOUNT – HOW WILL I RECEIVE COMMUNICATIONS ABOUT GRADUATION?

All communications will be sent to both students Unimail and personal email addresses, so they won’t miss out on any information. We recommend that graduating students add graduation@winchester.ac.uk onto your list of safe senders.

CAN I CHANGE WHICH CEREMONY I AM DUE TO ATTEND?

It is unfortunately not possible to change to a different ceremony. If the date or time is therefore not convenient, you will have to graduate in absentia (i.e., not attend).

In some exceptional circumstances, you may be able to defer attending your graduation for one year, although this is not guaranteed. If you would like to discuss deferring further, please email graduation@winchester.ac.uk.

CAN I ATTEND MY CEREMONY FOR FREE?

You do not need to buy a ticket to attend your ceremony, however you will be required to wear academic dress to take part. This will cost between £45.00 and £50.00 to hire, dependent on your level of study.

HOW MANY GUEST TICKETS WILL I RECEIVE?

If you would like any friends or family to attend your ceremony, they will need to purchase guest tickets. These will cost £20.00 each, and you will initially get the opportunity to purchase up to 3 guest tickets.

There may be an opportunity to purchase more tickets at a later date however this is not guaranteed. Further details regarding this will be provided alongside your official graduation invitation.

WILL THERE BE ANY FINANCIAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS?

The University are pleased to be continuing the Graduation Assistance Fund for the 2024 ceremonies. We will be releasing further information about the fund, including eligibility criteria and application details later in the year.

WILL THERE BE A LIVE STREAM AVAILABLE TO WATCH?

We will be live streaming all ceremonies into the Guildhall and on the University website. We will be releasing further information about the live stream later in the year.

Which name will appear on my certificate?

Your degree certificate will be printed with your full name, as recorded on your student record. This should match your full legal name (i.e., the name on your passport, birth certificate, driving licence, etc) at the time of study. If the name on your degree certificate does not match your legal name you may have problems in the future, particularly if you’re trying to get your qualification recognised internationally.

It is your responsibility to make sure your full name is correct on My Record before you finish your studies. If there are middle names missing, or anything is mis-spelled, please email graduation@winchester.ac.uk with a copy of some official photo ID and we will update this for you.

Please note that once your certificate has been printed, it will not be possible to change your name – except in exceptional circumstances.
