This course builds upon sector leading practice and research at the University of Winchester in Student Engagement in Higher Education as a means to enhance the student experience in contemporary Higher Education.

This course offers an opportunity to learn from sector experts from Winchester’s world leading practice and recently established Centre for Student Engagement with internally recognised Visiting Fellows. You will be provided with the opportunity to develop an applicable knowledge and critical understanding of theory and practice surrounding Student Engagement to be equipped to become a more applicable practitioner in diverse settings.

Upon completion of the programme, you will be able to synthesise an understanding of theory and policy of Student Engagement in Higher Education, and will have the ability to critically reflect on Student Engagement practice in your own context and understand the different practices (Student Voice, Partnership etc.). You will develop a critical awareness of the current challenges and agendas facing Student Engagement in Higher Education, informed by the forefront of contemporary policy and theoretical thinking. You will also apply your knowledge to challenging contexts of engaging students in Higher Education in a contemporary setting, and will be able to evaluate and directly plan practice to ensure Student Engagement practices are relevant to the module themes in diverse settings with varied stakeholders (diversity, democracy, scalability etc.). 

You will learn of multiple practices, policies and strategies to engage students in improving the student experience, in consideration of the parallel theory which has developed in this area from the notion of student satisfaction through to student-staff partnership. You will reflect on theory and themes such as; inclusivity, partnership, representation, power structures, student voice and accessibility, which relate to Student Engagement. The programme will offer opportunities for you to discuss, debate and critically reflect on developed practice, and your own practice to both learn and critically assess how students are engaged in these processes at your own institution.

Each module of the programme will be led by the springboard of the two day retreat at the University of Winchester, where content will be delivered and activity led discussions will begin. You will then interact with the remaining module by distance through weekly readings and online lectures on specific practice which will then be discussed in reading groups.

The assessment of the programme follows a programmatic assessment model where each assessment builds on the previous and the feedback will directly inform the next assessment. The assessments will all draw on developments, practice and the context of your home institution offering you the opportunity to reflect, synthesize and build thinking around practice in Student Engagement to take back to your workplace. Each assessment will be authentic with real-world application in an academic format.

This programme is viewed as a staff development opportunity for Higher Education professionals and academics who wish to expand their thinking and gain accreditation in the area of Student Engagement.  This programme could be relevant for staff members seeking L7 accreditation needed for promotion or are seeking to enhance their practice as academic programme/department leaders.

Assessment

The assessment strategy of the programme follows a programmatic assessment model where each assessment builds on the previous and the feedback will directly inform the next assessment. The assessments will all draw on developments, practice and the context of the students’ home institution offering students to reflect, synthesize and build thinking around practice in Student Engagement to take back to their workplace. Each assessment will be authentic with real-world application in an academic format.

Entry requirements

Normally, a first or second-class Honours degree or relevant professional experience will be required. The programme is suitable for aspiring practitioners, academics and professionals who are currently working in a Higher Education setting. 

It is expected that students who enrol on this programme are digitally literate and comfortable using the following applications: Microsoft Office Programmes Outlook and Word; Skype; general internet search engines; Virtual Learning Environments such as Canvas.

If English is not your first language you require IELTS 6.0 (including 5.5 in academic writing) or equivalent.

Year 1 (Level 7)

Semester 1 Credits

Student Engagement Theory into Practice 30

This module offers students an introduction to the core themes, policies and theories surrounding Student Engagement in Higher Education to enhance and support the student experience. Beginning with a two day retreat in September, this module will include introduction lectures, cohort discussions of the interpretations of the term ‘student engagement’ and explore how policy and published theory has inspired practice across HE, especially in the contemporary climate. The entire module will ask students to draw on practice from their own institutions and through a collaborative cohort, share practice and discuss theories through weekly discussions. The lectures and readings follow the retreat by distance in a ‘theory into practice’ / ‘practice informed theory’ model, covering such core areas of Student Engagement as; Partnership, Representation, Student Voice, Expectations, Student Transitions and Quality.  The two assessments for this module will be a presentation drawing on published theory and practice at the students’ home institution (40%) and a project plan on a Student Engagement initiative can be put in place at your University / workplace (60%).

Critically Reflecting on Student Engagement 30

This module builds on Student Engagement Theory into Practice by challenging students to critically assess and reflect on the processes, practices and policies referred as ‘Student Engagement’. This module begins with the programme’s second two day retreat in January, with workshops and discussions surrounding several themes and ‘lenses’ that have been applied to ‘student engagement’ critically in scholarship to ask how Student Engagement can be further enhanced and remain accessible and appropriate.  The remaining lectures, discussions and readings follow the retreat by distance, applying critical themes to contemporary practice each week. These themes will explore challenges facing Universities and Student Engagers today including; Representativeness, Partnership, Accessibility, Diversity, Evaluating Student Engagement, Sustaining Practice, Up-Scaling Practice and engaging those staff and students deemed to not be engaging. The two assessments for this module will be a weekly student-led seminar (25%) on the weekly theme, and a Critical Review which could be worthy for publication looking through a lens of one of the themes (75%).

Advanced Student Engagement Theory, Policy and Settings 30

This module builds on the first year of the programme challenging students to apply theoretical perspectives on education to areas of student engagement practice, thinking and strategies in students’ home institutions. This module also enhances students’ knowledge foundation by critically exploring the role of policy in higher education in diverse settings, drawing on international higher education and different forms of higher education provision. Students are asked to assess and critique how certain approaches of student engagement policies differ across different higher education settings. This module begins with the programmes third two-day retreat in September with workshops and discussion introducing students to key terms, theorists and challenges relating to taking a student engagement approach / ethos over entire higher education sectors.

Researching and Evaluating Student Engagement 30

This module prepares students for the Dissertation / Work Based Project module by equipping students with a selection of research methods / tools to create more equipped students to evaluate student engagement in their setting. This module begins with the programme’s fourth two-day retreat in January, with workshops and discussions on reflective exercises about students’ views of research, student engagement and evaluation, to begin to build an identifiable starting point for the dissertation / work-based project. The remaining lectures, discussions and readings follow the retreat by distance covering one-two research methods a week to equip students with an applicable set of research tools and considerations to deploy in their workplace. This will include both quantitative and qualitative research methods, considerations of deploying mixed methods and action research.

Dissertation / Work Based Project 60

This module draws together the entire Masters programme by asking students to develop a empirical or secondary based dissertation / work-based project by conducting an in-depth study in student engagement at their home institution. This module is supported by the Evaluating and Researching Student Engagement module prior and will be supported through several one-to-one tutorials with a supervisor across the summer. Titles for dissertations / work-based projects will be negotiated with your allocated supervisor and students will be supported throughout to produce an in-depth study which could be adapted into an internal report or an external publication.
